Fair and Balanced Medicine:
“So, Mr. Davis, MRI imaging shows an irregular growth, approximately 2.5 centimeters in width, in your left frontal cerebral cortex. On the other hand, classic medical theory from the 17th century Netherlands suggests that your persistent headaches are caused by demonic possession. And your mother-in-law would say it’s all in your imagination and to stop whining.
Double-blind empirical studies have shown that, with surgery to remove this growth, 5-year survival with cessation of symptoms is attained in 80% of cases. An alternative perspective, again from the 17th century Netherlands, would suggest that a few well-placed holes drilled into your skull would allow the evil spirits to drain out after a bit of rigorous shaking to get them a bit more juicy. And your mother-in-law would tell you to get a job already.”
It is a time of fear in the face of freedom, a time for the widening of previous roads and the opening of new paths, a time of an emptying country and swelling cities, yet a time when these paths are mined by knowing algorithms of the all-seeing eye. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection.

Oddly enough, the drilling holes in people’s heads technique DID work for some people…
Probably just the Hawthorn effect, I guess (that people helped may feel better because of the effort made, not because the method used actually helped them in itself).
