It is a time of fear in the face of freedom, a time for the widening of previous roads and the opening of new paths, a time of an emptying country and swelling cities, yet a time when these paths are mined by knowing algorithms of the all-seeing eye. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection.

These are the times when maps fade and direction is lost. Forwards is backwards now, so we glance sideways at the strange lands through which we are all passing, knowing for certain only that our destination has disappeared. We are unready to meet these times, but we proceed nonetheless, adapting as we wander, reshaping the Earth with every tread. Behind us we have left the old times, the standard times, the high times. Welcome to the irregular times.

Sanford Bishop Goes Over the Edge

Filed under Democrats, Election 2006, Legislation, Religion by Peregrin Wood at 5:15 pm

Yesterday, we reported on Oklahoma Republican Earnest Istook’s attempts to sneak God into the Constitution through a Trojan Horse amendment. Istook’s amendment purports to protect “religious freedom,” while actually working to enshrine Christianity, Judaism, and Islam as special religions that will receive particular government endorsement. Under Istook’s amendment, other religions would not have access to these special privileges. Over 100 members of the House of Representatives have signed on to this attempt to convert the United States of America from a democracy into a theocracy.

This afternoon, I am ashamed to see that a Democrat, Congressman Sanford Bishop of Georgia’s 2nd district, has joined with Earnest Istook on this crazy crusade. A few days ago, when Earnest Istook announced his intention to amend the Constitution of the United States to give certain religions special privileges, Sanford Bishop stood shoulder to shoulder with Istook as his partner in the effort.

Sanford Bishop is the kind of Democrat who gives the Democratic Party a bad name. It’s bad enough that Congressman Bishop is working with the far right fringe of the Republican Party to support crazy constitutional amendments. What’s even worse (although it’s less dramatic) is the way that Sanford Bishop is failing to serve the voters in his congressional district. Take a look at Sanford Bishop’s web page, for example, and you’ll see that, although we’re six months into the 109th Congress, Bishop’s staff has yet to issue a single press release online to help his constituents stay informed about what he’s been up to. Congressman Bishop’s idea of representing his constituents seems to be to keep them in the dark as much as possible.

Georgia’s 2nd district deserves better. Not too long from now, there will be a Democratic Party primary to select the 2006 nominee to run for Sanford Bishop’s seat in Congress. Sanford Bishop will almost certainly seek re-election. Please, please, please will some sane Democrat in Georgia’s 2nd district challenge Bishop in the Democratic primary? For the sake of the Democratic Party and for the sake of America, we need to get this right wing Democrat out of office.

  1. Dammit, I’m not in the 2nd district. I don’t know anyone who lives in the 2nd district. In fact, I didn’t think ANYONE lived in the 2nd district, LOL! Seriously, that’s a fairly backwoods area of Georgia—I’m surprised they elected a Democrat at all. Supporting conservative amendments like this is probably the way Mr. Bishop wins over the voters in this part of the state. I wonder which would be worse for that office: a Republican or a right-wing Democrat? At least a Republican wouldn’t be sullying the Democratic party name… *insert dramatic eye rolling here*

(BTW, anyone who lives in this part of Georgia, feel free to correct my misconceptions about this region of the state. I’d love to be wrong about it, but I’m looking at the map, and I’m not seeing a whole lot in the way of civilization in the southwest corner of the state…)

  2. I live in Columbus, GA which is just north of his distict, but I am somewhat familiar with parts of it and I can’t say that I am surprised by his actions. This is a poverty-srticken area of the state and in some areas the percentage of people w/ high school degrees is less than 40% and average annual income is $19,000.

  4. Gee, thanks for bringing some class with your genteel style of communication to this discussion, Hank. Facts are facts, and Sanford Bishop seems to be working quite well for the Republicans.

  5. Hahaha…

Never good when pointing out someone’s actions is all you need to do to insult their name.
