Well, now it’s for sure: Hillary Clinton is running for president in 2008.
What else would explain her decision to press for a federal investigation of the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas?
Not only does Clinton want a federal investigation initiated, she wants the rating of the game to be raised to “Adults Only” because kids who get their hands on the game could, if they went onto the internet and found a website with a particular piece of downloadable software, use that software to alter the game so that it shows simulated sex between the fictional characters in it.
Says Clinton, “There is no doubting the fact that the widespread availability of sexually explicit and graphically violent video games makes the challenge of parenting much harder.”
Heebedeeheebedeeheebedee.
Yes, that was the sound of my head slapping back and forth, trying mightily to make sense of this fine bit of pandering. And as I reach for the ibuprofen, I regret to say that the effort didn’t pay off. I still don’t get it. First of all, your kids have got to have the game for them to be so exposed. Solution? Don’t let your kids have the game. It really is that simple. Besides, not only do your kids have to have the video game for this whole exposure to profanity to progress, they’ve got to go onto the internet, find a software patch, download it and install it. If your kiddie is going to do all this, she or he has already got the old bump-n-grind on the mind. Oh, and finally, did I mention that they’ve got to go onto the internet to accomplish this? The internet? The internet? If little Harriet or Bucky Jr. wants to see some prime porking action and has unsupervised access to the internet, then, well, hmm, oh, I think that Grand Theft Auto is going to be the least of your worries.
To forestall the inevitable “you wouldn’t understand”: I am the parent of two children. I would understand, if it made a lick of rational sense.
But it’s not about rational sense, is it? Could it be that this is all about Hillary Clinton demonstrating that she will stand up for the kiddies and keep them from being exposed to nastiness, so that she can nail another plank in place for a ship she thinks will sail her to the presidency in 2008? Or am I just being cynical? Is the major problem in our society today really slutty computer programmers?
Actually, I saw a clip of that very scene just a few hours ago.
I guess the fact that the male remains completely clothed throughout the whole thing, and that no genitalia is actually shown, doesn’t make any difference?
I heard that one of the Grand Theft Auto game involved the male character shooting a prostitute after sleeping with her- to me that is far more dangerous and revolting.
Is this the definition of safe sex now, using fictional video game characters as your alter ego for your personal enjoyment?
I think it’s just entertainment value. I hardly think watching two little blocky characters “having sex” is going to damage anyone, the media just loves to get into a hype over “protecting the children”.
You know, Grand Theft Auto isn’t exactly Q-Bert, and if I had kids I wouldn’t want my 7-year-old playing it. But that’s why it’s rated “M,” and in theory nobody under the age of 17 is allowed to buy it.
But Hillary’s going a little Tipper Gore on us, if you know what I mean. Hey parents! If your kids have this video game, they can download porn from the web. Yeah, Hillary, and if your kids don’t have this game they can still download porn from the web.
Apparently, lots of stores let kids buy it even with the “M” rating. So it’s an issue of enforcement of existing measures to keep it out of the hands of young kids.
Why not enforce existing laws first, then legislate later?
Oh, right, because we “must act now. Blah blah blah.”
Hillary is doing a brilliant job by presenting the illusion of shifting her ideology more toward centre. If she can convince enough Americans that she’s a centrist she naturally will increase her advantage in 2008. Even if her tactics are a bit underhanded, she’s doing precisely what GW Bush did in 2000. Her actions are mostly harmless; American liberals need to take the pandering with a grain of salt and stay toghether behind Ms. Clinton. No squabbling. Who knows – with Hillary in 2008 you might even get a proper heathcare system!
A gentleman with whom I reenact is from Harlem, and up until Sen Clinton got in he was a staunch supporter. He said he really didn’t know why he thought that a person from Arkansas should be a senator from New York, but she talked a good game about what she would do with their support, blah, blah, or since this is New York, yadda, yadda. She was very interested in what went on in those parts of New york, wanted to help. So, she got in, and lo, turns out she never PROMISED anything…besides, she was interested in upstate…she’d get to them just keep her getting elected. He said, “WHY won’t we learn?”
