Well, we drove down to where we were to meet a little early only to find a good hundred people there already! Total count was over 250 people, cars drove past on one of the busiest roads in town, we had many honks and thumbs up, only saw two one finger salutes, but many more two fingers for peace! Afterwards, a group got together with the purpose of forming another “Camp Casey” here in Springfield to show solidarity, of course this is for after we talk with Dick Cheney tomorrow as he will be in town to address the Purple Heart Vets Convention. We made both of the local channels and the local paper had folks there too. You never got to see my face but on one of the channels they ended with a close up of my hand holding aloft my candle! All in all a good night.

Seen in Irvine, California: over 100 people holding vigil on a bridge over the freeway.

considering that’s all they got there in Irvine (nuthin-but-freeway), that’s not bad. 40 or so people in Lewisburg, PA, out in the middle of no freeways whatsoever, lansakes.

I’ll post pics tomorrow. The vigil I went to was great. Lots of supportive cars with peace signs sticking out of the window and happy honking. Only one “F*** you!” yelled out of a truck. One angry man with a “Dick Durbin, Dick Durbin, How many people did you kill today?” sign on the back of his car drove by twice. Otherwise, people were eager to show support to us.

In the parking lot across the street and half a block away one cop car keeping an eye on all.

The highlight was speaking with an older couple who came there late because their daughter-in-law was dilated to 2 centimeters and their reservist son was on his way home from Iraq because his baby is coming. They hate Bush and hate that people don’t get it. I asked about a draft in the future and the man said they’re already doing a draft. One guy in his son’s tent is 59 years old. They called him up.

Catherine Caporusso is the Chicago chapter pres. for Codepink and hosted this vigil. She read Cindy Sheehan’s letter to George Bush from last year where she explains to him what hard work is: burying your first born sweet son. She goes on in the letter to explain that because of Bush’s failed economic policies, she no longer has a job, but she will work full-time from now on to defeat Bush. I’m paraphrasing all of this. (Maybe you guys could print it.) It was very moving and everyone was teary-eyed.

My husband took the kids to the neighborhood pool so that I could go to the vigil. My 4 1/2 year old daughter did a complete bob for the first time. She submerged, stayed down and then came up beaming.

We all had a very good night.

About 200 people gathered in Mountain View, CA.

Karen Meredith, the mother of a soldier who died in Iraq, spoke briefly. Her son Kenneth Michael Ballard was all ready to come home, and a welcome-home party was planned for him in May of 2004.

But he was told at the last minute he was not coming home. He was called back to service through “stop-loss” measures. He never made it to his coming-home party.

But he did come home only a few days later, in a flag draped casket. Karen wanted a picture of the casket being returned, but the DOD refused.

Karen is going to Crawford on Sunday.

There are 1,858 Cindy Sheehans all across America. Tonight, I met one from my home town.

My photos are posted in the discussion forum.

How would I post them here?

    Thanks.
