    Who’s Mario Cuomo?

    Oich! Who’s Mario Cuomo?

Mario Cuomo is the former governor of New York State, re-elected many times. He is very intelligent, and very articulate.

Now, back in 1988 and 1992, people were very eager to get Mario Cuomo to run for President, but he refused. What I heard is that it was because Cuomo had skeletons in his closet of some kind, but I don’t think that rumor was ever publicly confirmed.

Mario’s son Andrew Cuomo served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Bill Clinton. This year, he is running for Attorney General of New York State. I’ve met Andrew Cuomo on a couple of occasions, and I’ve heard him speak, and he seems like a very decent and capable guy.

If Andrew Cuomo were to gain the Attorney General’s seat, and then the governor’s seat, or a Senate position, could he run for President?

I’d heard that Andrew Cuomo is very ambitious, to use a polite term. Did he strike you as a glad-hander when you met him, J. Clifford?

Mario Cuomo had a reputation for high self-regard, but he always struck me as idealistic, civic-minded, well-spoken, thoughtful, broad-minded, and positive in his approach to governing and government. And he wasn’t a silver-spooned child of entitlement, either; this guy’s parents were grocers. So he knew how most of us actually live our lives, unlike a certain resident of Kennebunkport.
