It’s Sunday, my back is giving me hell, has been all night, and I turned on the old stereo to distract me from the pain. What do I hear? Jesse Colin Young singing “Get Together”, followed by “Darkness,Darkness”…titles that probably mean nothing to the younger people that post at this site, but were anthems to people of my generation to try, at least to change this madness…and I found my eyes filled with tears (they are right now, makes it hard to type)…makes me wonder about all those people who were such posers with their “political activism”…the bastards turned Republican as soon as the wind changed. Learn from your elders, kids…don’t make the same mistakes we did. God, but I feel old and useless today.

My son and daughter-in-law are home now, she’s going to open up their place and take the kids, my son will stay a week. then go down for the rest of his convalescent leave. Daughter-in-law and wife had a real heart to heart on the care and feeding of a probably less than sane man. Wife went through it twice with me, so far so good with my son. Since the days have been somewhat nice we went for a ride, son and I, so WE could have a heart to heart. When your thirty-something son, a big galoot, weeps on your shoulder for over an hour, and you hold him like you did when he was six, well, maybe your usefulness as a person isn’t over. Did him good to get it out, though, and talk about what he saw. Funny, though, the other week when I went down for Agent Orange treatment or whatever it was, some of the young’uns I talked to said us old timers made the best listeners and didn’t judge like many. All I could think was, holy shit, they’re not starting THAT shit again…

Mike, brother, we may be old, but take it from me, we’re not useless. Not as long as we keep going and can talk articulatley we’re needed. I must have had about five gallons of weep-snot on my shoulders and neck in the last three weeks.
