BUSH DEAD — BURIAL THURSDAY AFTERNOON

Bush is dead.

I am referring, of course, to Victoria Bush of Finley, who died of Typhoid fever on July 6, 1933. She was buried Thursday afternoon after a service at the Richwoods Methodist Church.

Oh, you’re upset, aren’t you? Upset because you thought that I was referring to George W. Bush as being dead?

Well, look at yourself. Is that what it would take now? Is that how far we have to go to upset you?

I look at my fellow Americans and I wonder. I mean, come on, check it out:

==> George W. Bush, the President of the most powerful nation in the world, violates the law by wiretapping Americans’ phones without notice and without a warrant.

==> Even the Republican members of Congress implicitly agree that Bush is breaking the law, trying to muster support for a bill that would make Bush’s actions retroactively legal.

==> Even George W. Bush knows he is breaking the law. He said it himself at the same time he lied to the American people in a 2004 campaign speech:

See, in order to make the world more peaceful, it’s essential that those of us in positions of high responsibility speak clearly and mean what we say…. When the President speaks, he better mean it…. Now, by the way, any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires — a wiretap requires a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we’re talking about chasing down terrorists, we’re talking about getting a court order before we do so. It’s important for our fellow citizens to understand, when you think Patriot Act, constitutional guarantees are in place when it comes to doing what is necessary to protect our homeland, because we value the Constitution.

==> Only one, ONE, ONE member of the entire United States Senate, Russell Feingold of Wisconsin, moves to censure George W. Bush for breaking the law. Says Feingold:

The President must be held accountable for authorizing a program that clearly violates the law and then misleading the country about its existence and its legality. The President’s actions, as well as his misleading statements to both Congress and the public about the program, demand a serious response. If Congress does not censure the President, we will be tacitly condoning his actions, and undermining both the separation of powers and the rule of law.

==> The response of the Republican Party? Feingold is not only “crazy” to try to punish the George W. Bush for breaking the law, but is wrong “to suggest that there is in any way a lack of support for our commander in chief.”

==> The response of the American public? Yawn. Too busy catching up with news on the latest shows, music and gadgetry out there to notice.

No, George W. Bush isn’t dead. But if you’re not out of your seat hopping mad about this, you might as well be dead for the meager effect your apathy will engender. This is the face of 21st Century America: we have slouched our way into a police state, and we just don’t give a shit.

  1. Note that the article on the Guantanamo Bay travesties of justice got four extra reads and the article about the technorati tags on television shows like the Sopranos and a Microsoft computer gadget got over ten times that much. These priorities are maladaptive, to put it politely.

Right wing usually tends to have control over the media. It’s an everyday life thing.

Left wing usually has control of the arts, though. More and more political films are appearing…

Anyone else see the Masters of Horror one that mixed zombies and politics? It was pretty good.

Great observations. You’re right, most people don’t care what’s happening to this country. ‘It’s necessary!’ they claim with patriotic zeal in their eyes. Laughable, the Repubs reponse to Feingold. Crazy? They must be talking about themselves.

I agree, as a Canadian I dont think it’s just an American thing. I think we are all becoming 21st century “Mildred Montags” in Bradbury’s -Fahrenheit 451. Its great to applaud movies like “Hotel Rwanda” if most even see them. Great entertainment! Maybe I can catch the sequel “Peppy Siesta at the Sudan Chad Motor-Court”. There’s also a new reality mini-series in the works, “Smoke & Mirrors”,shortly followed by “Shock & Awe” the latter is set in the exotic local of Iran. Ya I know it sounds like a remake of the Iraq series, I saw that one on TV couple of years ago. Its all good entertainment. Anyway I gotta check the real-estate listings. I’ve heard the housing markets gonna be great after H5N1 is past. I’ll be a short one. Anyway, I have a headache, and my valium is kicking in, so I’m gonna head off and catch some Leno. Sleep tight!

I’ve been extremely angry ever since Bush TOOK office. With the Rethugs in complete power, i’ve continuously stated that the government is now broken and we can’t expect it to work as designed (especially the checks and balances dept.) Of course corruption has always plagued our form of democracy, but now it’s completely out of hand, with lobbyists writing legislation, Congress unable or unwilling to do its job, and our resources, revenues, and rights flying away at an unprecedented pace. The fix has been in since day one, and yet people are continually shocked at the abuses of power. Finally the polls are catching up to what we progressives have seen all along. Well, it may be too late to do much about it until the next round of elected pirates get into office. One of the main complaints i have is that people who run for office formerly were people of integrity, able to lead us with wisdom, heart and fairness. This seems to no longer be the case.

Do you have a reliable source for that claim, Eric?
