Oh, they were good about it for a while. So good. They kept up the whole “we must secure our borders from the terrorists” line for so long, even though there’s no evidence of terrorists gaining illegal access to this country to carry out an attack. They said it was about keeping Americans safe, not about keeping anybody out, no no no, why of course not. It’s not about hating anybody! Why, we love those tortilla nigg… um, lovely Hispanic people! They just need to stay in their own country!
Then they just couldn’t help themselves. It’s so hard to hold in the bigotry for so long. Kind of like holding in breath while Mama’s watching. Or like holding back that delicious orgasm when you’ve been rocking the ol’ hips for what seems like hours. Or saying “No” to that last, cold drink of beer. So they just slipped in an amendment that declares English to be the “national language” and denies government services to people who don’t speak English.
Help me out here. I thought America wasn’t supposed to be about competition between people of different ethnicities. I thought the issue at hand wasn’t supposed to be about that queasy feeling you get when you’re surrounded by people who are saying things and they could be talking about YOU and you just don’t know because they’re talking so, so fast and sneaky-like! I thought that we were supposed to be talking about BORDER SECURITY and keeping the TERRORISTS from BLOWING SHIT UP.
So, someone explain to me how declaring English to be the National Language maintains BORDER SECURITY in any way. Someone explain to me how keeping people who don’t speak English from obtaining government services thwarts TERRORISTS. Someone tell me how excluding people on the basis of language keeps people from BLOWING SHIT UP.
Because I just don’t get it. Unless, oh… gee. Maybe this never was about border security. Maybe this was never about terrorists. Maybe this was never about people blowing shit up.

Yes, you see some Democrats in there, the Democrats who vote typically vote conservative anyway. And you see a lot of so-called “moderate” Republicans in there too: Collins, Grassley, Hagel, DeWine, Saint John McCain the Holy 2008 Presidential candidate, Snowe, Specter, Sununu, Voinovich. These are all Senators who chose to satisfy to the Mexican Pieces of Shit Voter. Come Election Day 2006, we all need to remember who stood on the side of hatred — and who didn’t. Check out the roll call vote and you’ll see that every Senator but one who stood firm against the Fucking Mexicans segment of America and held fast for an inclusive vision of America is a Democrat. The only Republican who took a stand against the Mexican Pieces of Shit model of American values was Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico, who clearly knows who butters his bread. Come Election Day 2006, we all need to remember who stood up for an inclusive America — and who didn’t.
Just when I start to think that there’s no difference between conservatives and the rest of America any more, the Republicans and conservative Democrats pull out a new piece of hate and remind me why it is so important that we call them out on their divisive, xenophobic, fear-mongering, hate-filled agenda for this country. The only reason for the language difference is that Spain started occupying that area instead of England, though, right? You’d think by now these differences could be put aside…

Having just come from a 3 week holiday on the continent (thus my lack of recent posts), I can safely say that at no point during my stay in Texas, nor on my Greyhound bus trip from Texas to Canada, was I bothered by any Mexicans.
Felt bad that I couldn’t talk to them, but they were all polite.
The white supremist sitting behind me at one point of my trip, however… Do I want to hear about how he beats people up out of love of the skin colour he shares with me? Not really, no. Thankfully I never had to talk to him.

I was in the Middle East on the Christmas Eve before the millineum and received a warning call from the US embassy to avoid public places. The attack that had been planned for the holiday was averted, but sixteen people were later arrested, including one who was trying to cross from Canada to the US. I don’t think we can simply announce that terrorists will not use land border crossings and expect them to follow that advice.
This amendment doesn’t appear to actually do anything. It just says English is the ‘national language’, and this phrase was watered down from ‘official language’.
Damen, what kind of Spanish is that supposed to be? “Go to the shit, you (formal polite form) pierced racist of the donkey”? You’ve got to be kidding. Try this one, but you won’t find it in a dictionary, “chingate, culo” or the more common “chingate huevón”, or the even more common “chinga de tu madre huevón”. The Mexicans like to bring someone’s mother into the discussion, while with the Arabs, it is the sister.
Are you saying you advocate opening the borders, or rewarding those who break immigration laws?
Don’t forget that Americans sometimes work illegally in other countries. In Europe they follow the orange harvest. In other countries they teach English, although few language schools have enough influence to get them a work visa, which can cost three times the teacher’s salary for the semester.
Can we expect other countries to open their borders to Americans? If I go to another country should I not try to learn their language, but demand they learn mine? Should I be able to expect to get government services, be provided with a free English interpreter, and if they don’t do it, well, they’re just bigots? Put the shoe on the other foot, and see what kind of answer you get.

But that’s precisely the point! English is not “our language,” unless by “our” you mean English-speaking Americans, which is pretty telling, Alan. Visit the southwest, or Miami, or parts of Louisiana, or neighborhoods in San Francisco, or heck, even my own town of Durham, North Carolina. You’ll find that “our language” in America is often Spanish, or Mandarin, or Creole, or something else. Until they pass this law, English is NOT the national language — there is no national language.
I’m fully aware that European societies are characterized by xenophobic bigotry. Are you suggesting that we join them?

So don’t tell me you need a government pronouncement to know that native-born Americans speak English. If you speak another language as your first language, you were born somewhere else.
And in this state, Spanish speaking individuals who were not born in this country have so much political clout that they have jobs ahead of US born English-speaking citizens. I was laid off from a state job while dozens of foreign-born AFSCME members with less seniority were not laid off because they had a job classification that said they knew how to speak Spanish, Arabic, and Polish. They were born somewhere else, their families live somewhere else, and they are able to go back to what they call ‘home’. I was born here, so I have nowhere else to go. Maybe I should emigrate to Canada, where my cute little pale skin won’t be such a handicap. Do I have any rights?

The last time I checked, Native Americans were not being educated on the reservation, but rather are sent to boarding schools where they are required to speak English at all times.
I doubt very much whether you have ever met a Native American, but I have lived next to a reservation and worked with Native Americans in a social services setting and can tell you they ALL speak English with the same fluency I do.
And no, bigotry is not limited to those with pale skin. While I claim Indian ancestry, I do not look particularly Indian. Last night while walking in my neighborhood, I walked past an open garage with a radio tuned to a Spanish-speaking station. As soon as the guy next to the garage saw me, he started urinating on the ground. A half hour later I was harrassed in Greek by a passing car.
This Cinco de Mayo passed quietly, but last year a guy with a Mexican flag was standing on the street corner shouting racial insults at any paleish-looking woman who drove past. Fortunately the police still regard this as unacceptible behavior and will respond to racial hate incidents against whites.

I’m afraid you’re mistaken, Jim, and no wonder. I have the feeling you’re the kind of person who enjoys white privelege but never gets around to those neighborhoods where you can actually see those immigrants you speak so knowingly about.
Back in goode olde Viking times when my ancestor Hrolf the Walker sacked Paris, many Vikings came to live in Normandy, in fact it’s named for the northmen. But in the very first generation the Viking nobles decried the fact that their offspring no longer knew the Old Norse language. The same with immigrants to the U.S. If you would bother to get to know any of them, instead of just making pompous assertions, you will find that their children do indeed speak perfect English, but are not so hot at the language of their parents. That was true in my family as well. My grandfather understood Swedish, the only language his parents spoke, but could only read, write, and speak English.
You seem to assume that because many privileged people are white that all white people are privileged. In fact, there are whites that were not born with a silver spoon in their mouths, and these are the people whose wages are driven downward by illegal immigrants willing to work for money below the minimum wage. I have tried to get these jobs myself and they never hire Americans.
I notice you ridicule me for asking whether I have rights, but you don’t venture to answer the question.

Nice try, Jim, but I’m just not buying your friend-of-the-immigrant line. Bragtown is indeed quite mixed, being 54% African-American and 38% white, with a growing Hispanic population along the Roxboro Road commercial strip. That would make your block whiter than average for the neighborhood. Indeed, the area around Roxboro Road is considered to be more Caucasian than the rest of Bragtown. In fact, that area is generally considered to be a good starter neighborhood for young white couples like yourselves.
Interviews with residents indicate ethnic groups do not interact. Clearly you have never been in their kitchens, swilled wine with them, or talked to their children if you don’t know the first generation knows English. Ask your wife. The immigrant patients will bring their children into the hospital to translate for them, and the kids speak effortless English. No, if you knew your neighbors, you would know that. You’re the kind of person who goes to elitist all-white universities and then acts like they know what’s in the best interest of ethnic groups.
You’re no friend of the immigrants; you’re making some abstract argument for your own purposes, maybe just to ‘prove’ that if the U.S. does not open its borders to unlimited immigration it must be because of hate. And what would that reason be? Maybe when the immigrants come in, unlike the poor white trailer trash they are completing for jobs with, they can be expected to vote Democrat. And as one of the elites, you think you can control them for the purpose of winning some elections. What about WHITE immigrants? Where did skin colour come into this?
Learning languages is TOUGH for the people it doesn’t click for. Children will normally pick up the languages they grow up around, and from that some sort of nack for it, but most people will struggle a LOT.
I did 2 1/2 yrs of French and 2 1/2 yrs of German in my secondary school, and not much of it sank in to be honest. I’d learn some phrases if I decided to go and live in a place that speaks a different language, but the WHOLE thing?
That’s practically impossible.
English is a bitch of a language, too, unlike Spanish. Again, EASIEST foreign language to learn right there.
And the kids of immigrants to England often have better English than some of our “pedigree” Brits, sooo… It’s a bit more complicated than you’re making out.

You need to relax a little, you’re getting all stressed out. Put your left whatsit back where it belongs and try thinking with your brains instead. If the only argument you have left is to call me names, then you really have run out of arguments.
There isn’t complete local agreement on the boundaries of neighborhoods, but some do consider the area between Roxboro and Northgate park to be part of Bragtown. Google it yourself. I don’t give a red cent or even a quarter of a red cent. Like other neighborhoods this one plays out some common themes–the closure of Kmart and the movie theater, and the corresponding rise of Walmart, BASED ON CHEAP FOREIGN LABOR, that doesn’t provide health insurance and pays its employees so poorly they qualify for medicaid, and THEY EVEN TELL THEIR EMPLOYEES HOW TO APPLY FOR GOVERNMENT MEDICAL ASSISTANCE.
All this being played out a mile or whatever from under Jim’s nose, but no, Jim wants to open the international borders wide and let anyone and everyone just walk right in. Maybe while he’s in a generous mood, he’ll be willing to give up his own health insurance to help even out regional income disparities.
It must be difficult out there in Durham to share holidays with immigrant neighbors who, since they are in the state of North Carolina, speak not a word of English, and, unlike any pother children anywhere in the last ten centuries of recorded history, their children don’t speak any English either, even if they “interact” multiculturally at school.
In my neighborhood, you either swill wine (hispanic), Jack Daniels (white), ignore your neighbors, or call the police on them. Last summer I tried to introduce gardening, but ended up calling the police again. Maybe this year. Your neighborhood has some blue collar, mine is almost all blue collar; we have a higher percentage of renters as opposed to home owners, and the median rent is quite a bit lower here. Oh yes, this week we have a new flashing blue light two blocks down the street, a camera that is focused on the street to catch drug deals, maybe that’s what the alderman did about the petition we signed against the crack houses down there.
If you’re saying I’m bigoted and full of hate because you have all these credentials based on who you live next to, I’m just not buying it.
So the legislators decided they want to emphasize English. So what. Other countries have official languages. Did the legislators say “MEXICANS ARE PIECES OF SHIT”? Of course not. Jim said it. Can he read minds? I doubt it. Instead of emotional appeal, why not talk policy? But of course, that’s not nearly as much fun.

Maybe you really are that Joe Six-pack kind of guy who sees his wages half of what they were ten years ago, has lost his health insurance to boot, and now sees his wages and buying power further eroded by illegal immigrants who will work for less than minimum wage.
Maybe you really do live in a blue-collar neighborhood and work for minimum wage and really understand the Americans who have seen their manufacturing jobs go overseas to sweatshop labor.

The “crisis” of immigration is an inevitable part of our country that has only recently been brought up for midterm elections. Making the official language of the US english won’t have any effect on our government or country. And may I ask how requiring government employees to speak english will reduce illegal immigration? Considering illegal immigrants are not working for the government for obvious reasons. This legislation is simply a distraction from the real problems our country faces, such as rising oil prices and the conflict in the Middle East.

About official language, and language in general: everyone agrees there are certain jobs that illegal immigrants do that for some reason–maybe because they don’t want to pay minimum wage–no one wants to open up to American citizens. So is there an infinate number of these jobs? No. At some point, when more and more immigrants come in they will be competing for the same low paying jobs with other immigrants, and the wages for this type of job will be depressed even further.
So, what happens to the legal immigrants who are now competing with illegal imigrants for jobs that probably don’t need a lot of English skills. Well, they learn to speak English and become somewhat acculturated, and then they are qualified for government jobs which are a little above the less-than-minimum-wage send-the-money-home-to-mexico type of job. The illegals are going to need social services and the legals are bilingual and can provide these services on behalf of the U.S. governmnet. so there is the cycle–the legals need a certain number of illegals in order to justify their higher paying jobs and their niche in the middle class. the illegals become legal and need a new cycle of new illegals to practice their social services on. Making English the official language stops this continuing cycle, while leaving in place the people who are already in the middle class.

1) if is clear mexico has a population problem and it is the population pressures that are sending their extra people across the border. Why don’t they have health clinics with birth control so they can control their own population? I’ll tell you why not. The pope. they are all catholic down there. The catholic church would never permit them to solve their population problem, so they put the problem on the U.S. which has close to zero population growth.
2)mexico also has some graft and corruption issues which sends more mexican across the border. While we are not perfect in this area–transparency international rates the U.S. number 16 in the world , taking the extra people into the U.S. means mexico is not forced to solve its own problems. By acting as a safety valve for their imperfect political system, we actually encourage their problems and help maintain corrupt Mexican politicians.

No, Phil. Their English is correct. Yours is not. A sentence ends with a period, not a comma. The first word of a sentence is capitalized, as are proper names. If you address someone by name, a comma is placed after the name. A question mark, not a period, is placed at the end of a question. And “hmmmm” has four m’s.

I am a Native American who has read nearly all of this racist website crap; so, considering that I am a member of the only group of people who actually has a right to be in this land that they now call America, I will offer my unique perspective on this volatile issue. When I hear European-, African-, and Asian-descended “American†people cry, bitch, moan, and complain about the influx of illegal Latino immigrants into America, I laugh. In fact, I laugh my ass off. You see, during a period lasting for centuries, we Indians complained bitterly about the droves of aggressive Western European “illegal aliens†— white people — immigrating here (without our permission) and destroying our once-beautiful land with their voluminous and overwhelming foreign presence. Their intent was to steal our land and natural resources, and that is exactly what they did — nearly all of it. Now, we Indians live like aliens in our own land, persecuted by racist foreigners (whites, blacks, Asians) who mistakenly think that this land now belongs to them and that they are the “all-Americans.†What a joke. Well, the joke is on them. The tides are now turning, and these arrogant and racist people are now beginning to taste a little of their own medicine — and they obviously don’t like it. Let me explain to your disturbingly-ignorant asses (in a very simple way, so that even the stupidest among your stupid asses can understand it) just why your complaints about the Latino presence in America is hopelessly flawed.
(1) The majority of Latinos are part Native American, so they have more of a right to migrate anywhere across North America than any of you European-descended assholes. Indeed, before you aggressive Europeans drew your arbitrary and land-grabbing border between America and Mexico, the Latinos actually did migrate across the land, just as their ancestors had done for millennia. Do you foreign European assholes really think that any people of native descent care what you think about their crossing “your†border?
(2) America stole most of the American Southwest from Mexico, following our forcing them to sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, in 1848. A delusional America was fulfilling a promise by their “God†(Manifest Destiny) whereby America should occupy all of the land between the Atlantic and the Pacific. The amount of territory seized from Mexico comprised almost half of the country of Mexico, and the states formed from our theft include New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, and Wyoming. Many Americans recognized the criminality and evil surrounding America’s actions, including Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant (who fought in the war, but nearly resign from the Army because of our sins against Mexico — sins which he later believed that America paid for by our suffering through a Civil War). Similar greedy land-grabbing tactics were recently denounced by President George Bush 41, who condemned Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in 1991 by arrogantly and falsely declaring that “America will not tolerate naked aggression!†Ha! What hypocrisy. America won’t tolerate it, unless America is the country committing it.
(3) The only reason that so many of the Latinos here are considered to be “illegal†is because they don’t have an “Ellis Island†that would quickly process them, making them legal — a privilege that has only been extended to Europeans. You see, for centuries, the Western Europeans immigrated here with no restrictions and waiting periods whatsoever. In fact, America’s immigration policies were incredibly racist from the get-go, allowing the immigration of any European who wanted to come here, while denying the same rights to all others — especially “dark-skinned peoples.†Those policies lasted until 1965, with the intention of stocking this land with white Europeans. Now, the European Americans are telling the Latinos that they have to wait at the end of the immigration line, sometimes waiting 12 years to be granted legal immigration status. Yeah, riiight! Like that’s gonna happen. Try telling that crap to some idiot who is not familiar with America’s racist past regarding immigration, and they might respect your immigration laws. Otherwise, forget it, hombres. Ain’t gonna happen. If such restrictive immigration laws had been in effect from the beginning, then I can assure you that most of your white asses would still be in Europe, where you belong.
So, assholes, if you don’t like what is happening in America, then by all means, do us all a favor and go back to Europe, Africa, Asia, wherever — that is where you belong, unless you are Native American. At one time, this land had no one walking its grounds. People migratred here from the “old world” and first settled it spreading southward. Later on others came here from different places as everyone knows. That makes all of us immigrates, doesn’t it?
People like comming here to settle here because they like what this land/country has to offer. These benefits are made possible by what the residents here have contributed toward making this possible. The contributors are from all races from all over the world.
One of the problems we have here is the practice of taking from Peter to pay Paul. Some of that is necessary, but without some control it could get a little out of hand, which is an issue that some residents believe that it has got out of hand.
So some immigrants want some control. This gives rise to “legal immigration”.

I would like to make a comment, and I have no hate towards anyone in this debate, though I seem to be the only one who doesn’t!
The U.S. can not take everyone in the world who wants to come here; it is simply impossible due to the limited resources available, and the fact that there are only so many this country can feed and support. So the government has to control the borders of this country if it is to continue to survive. Sure it would be great if we could let every Mexican that wanted to come here actually come to this country but we can’t.
The U.S. has almost twice as many people living here as those living in Mexico (300 million here compared to 120 million there) so it has nothing to do with over population in Mexico! The reason they come here is because their government is corrupt and would rather let them die in our deserts than to take care of them with their resources! Mexico isn’t a poor nation; it has gold, silver, oil, plenty of good farm land, etc., so they could take care of their people if they wanted to.
So what needs to happen is for the Mexican people to force their government to change or over-throw it for a new government! It isn’t the United States responsibility to take care of the Mexicans; it is their government’s responsibility to take care of them. The U.S. has the right to stop the illegal immigration no matter what you may think and to argue otherwise just shows your ignorance!
And as for the Native Americans, yes we did treat them terribly, but such is the history of all nations even the Indian nations that were here first! They killed and took land from each other long before “whitey†came here to show them how it was really done! You lost the war and like all losing factions you got the shitty end of the stick! So in your own words get over it!
My Great Grandmother was a full blooded Choctaw, so don’t even call me a racist of bigot because I have nothing but great pride in the fact that she was my Great Grandmother! My only sadness comes from the fact that I never got to know her before she passed on! Though if you look at me I look nothing like her except for my long hair which is blonde instead of black! So do you think that I would be welcome if I walked into a reservation of theirs? Who would be the bigot and racist then?
I think you all should step back and take a deep breath, and realize that we need to work together to change this nation for the better, and not fight amongst ourselves like children! But that is only my opinion and like assholes everybody has one!

However, one of those black persons saved my white life. He was a neuro surgeon. After a serious head injury accident, he performed brain surgery on me. Most people with my type of injury usually die.

Not all mexicans smell bad and are poor, for example right now i own a xbox 360 elite, a WII, a notebook and a pc (both hp)and own a LG LCD 49”.We mexicans don’t like to live here cuz there’s much crime in our cities.
