Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-La.), the target of a 14-month public corruption probe, was videotaped accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from a Northern Virginia investor who was wearing an FBI wire, according to a search warrant affidavit released yesterday.
A few days later, on Aug. 3, 2005, FBI agents raided Jefferson’s home in Northeast Washington and found $90,000 of the cash in the freezer, in $10,000 increments wrapped in aluminum foil and stuffed inside frozen-food containers, the document said.
Toss the corrupt asshole out of Congress and into jail. I don’t care if he’s a Democrat or not (Hell’s Bells, it’s not like he was a consistently progressive lawmaker anyway). I don’t care if tossing him from Congress and into jail makes the difference between a Democratic House and a Republican House in the wake of the upcoming 2006 elections. Regardless of his party affiliation, he has betrayed his constituents, the law, and the ideals upon which this nation was founded.
Toss the corrupt asshole out of Congress and into jail.
Exactly! Let’s get rid of corruption wherever we find it! The Republicans will want to jump all over this at first, but then, since MOST of them seem to be involved in scandals themselves, will show some kind of leniency (and hope others will remember this when it becomes their turn under the microscope). Just another case of the broken system of government we live under today.
I heard about this on NPR this morning. Naturally, Jefferson insists he’s innocent. Oh, OK, then. So he put the $90K in his freezer…why? Maybe his freezer offered a better interest rate than his bank.
Cold cash, John. Cold cash.
I agree with you 100%. Jail is the only place for any person, regardless of Party affiliation, who knowingly betrays his/her duty to the voters that put the person into that high office to represent the voting constituency in their district or state, in addition to the constitution, and our laws. No mercy…these crooked sonsofbitches should be sent to a Maximun-Security prison, and put in with Bubba, Big Tyrone, and their other cellie, Nacho; where they can “learn how the other half lives”, so to speak…Do that to about, oh, say, ten or fifteen of the thieving bastards, and we would see a remarkable change in the behavior of the rest of our elected representatives in Congress.
Don’t hold your breath on anything like that happening…but, gee,it sure sounds like it’d be fun to hear about…
