![]() | Letter to the Editor Re: Gonzales, Bush and Self-Investigation |
Earlier today, I wrote about how important (and how easy) it is to write to local news outlets on political issues of the day. Newspapers (and news programs on the TV and Radio) are the means by which a large number of people not only inform themselves about current events, but also orient their own opinions and preferences regarding the resolution of those events. Because I’d hate to talk the talk without walking the walk, I made sure to write my own letter to the editor today. The letter regards Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ recent congressional testimony and the Bush administration’s program of stifling even its own investigations of itself. The text of the letter follows, edited only by adding in the odd hyperlink.
Dear Editor:
I’m trying desperately to get a grip on recent events inside Washington. After the world found out that George W. Bush had been ordering surveillance on Americans without any warrants, the Office of Professional Responsibility in the Justice Department (part of the Bush administration) declared its intention to investigate the origin and legality of this program. We found out the OPR investigation would go nowhere after the Bush administration wouldn’t grant the necessary security clearances for the Bush administration’s investigation of itself. This week, it came out that George W. Bush denied the security clearances himself.
So what it boils down to is that George W. Bush has informed the Bush administration that it cannot investigate George W. Bush because even the Bush administration itself doesn’t have, thanks to George W. Bush, the necessary clearance to investigate George W. Bush. Have I got that straight?
The last time a sitting president pulled insider shenanigans like this, he was forced to resign in the face of outrage and shame. Now it seems the best we can get from America is a collective yawn. What has happened to We the People? Are we blind, deaf, or just plain dumb?

And it is done with great profiteering. So here’s to the rule of law - that rabid, deceit-laden tsunami of activity directed at citizens wherein every law on the books is violated to establish…..law-breaking! Meanwhile, our troops are fighting overseas in defence of freedom. And I’m going to bed now, hoping the tooth fairy leaves me a few bucks.
