September 1 Impeachment Day: What is the Opposite of “Spread”?

I don’t know how to write about what’s happening to the plan to make September 1 Impeachment Day, with vigils and organizing meetings around the country. The problem is that I can’t find an appropriate word that is the opposite of “spreads.” You know, as in, “the Impeachment Day movement is spreading from the coasts inland…”. I’m so unfamiliar with this: does one say that a movement “contracts,” or “shrinks,” or “reverse propagates”? How about “implodes?”

That’s right: in the three days since I last took a look at the map of Impeachment Day events, the number of events seems to have shrunk. Events have actually been taken off the map. According to the map, there are just nine events nationwide on the September 1 Impeachment Day roster, and one of these is actually a conference organized by the Omega Institute on “how women are changing the way we live both at work and at home.” A total of five people are signed up to attend these nine events.

Am I missing something, or is this a virtual movement, in the worst sense of the word “virtual”?

    “atrophies”.

“gathers” “turns inward” and “dies” come to mind.
