Imagine 60 mutilated bodies found in D.C. this morning

Imagine how America would react to the news that the mutilated bodies of 60 people who had been tortured before being killed were found in Washington D.C. this morning. Don’t worry. It hasn’t happened.

Now look around you and see how America is reacting to the very real news that 60 mutilated corpses bearing the signs of torture have been found in the streets of Baghdad this morning. Yes, just on this one morning.

Who is responsible for these deaths? No one knows for sure. However, some of the death squads that are kidnapping, torturing, and killing Iraqis may be operating with the tacit approval, if not the explicit backing, of the Iraqi government put in power by the American military. This is the government that American soldiers are fighting for and dying to protect.

What’s worse, the American government may itself be responsible for the development of some of the death squads currently in operation. It’s a long piece of forgotten news, but we reported on it years ago: Beginning in the early days of the American occupation of Iraq, the American military began employing agents of Saddam Hussein’s secret police, the Mukhabarat. The Mukhabarat were infamous for using torture and killings in the night to enforce order.

Khalaf al-Alayan, a Sunni member of the Iraqi parliament, has made the following dire warning: “The clock is starting to strike after today’s events. They consider Sunnis terrorists who must be killed. If the zero hour is coming, we will take the decisions needed to defend ourselves.”

Our military will be at ground zero at zero hour. Is that mission accomplished?

Keeping her eyes open,
Mother Davis
