Only 58 percent of Americans Reject Torture

Mother Davis looks to the left of her, and then to the right, as she reports,

A poll released today by the BBC finds that only 58 percent of Americans are willing to say that they reject torture in all forms. 38 percent of Americans say that some forms of torture ought to be allowed. The international average in this poll was 29 percent approval of some torture. “The percentage favouring torture in certain cases makes it one of the highest of all the countries polled,” says the BBC.

I’m not going to preach on this subject, because I don’t think that there is anything I can say that can adequately address the horror I feel at seeing this information. Only allow me to suggest an activity for Americans who care. Go to a crowded place, sit down, and spend five minutes considering the idea that, if the people you’re seeing reflect the national average, four out of every ten people you see before you would support the idea of having you tortured, if the circumstances were right.

Thanking the BBC for asking the question,
Mother Davis
