Tom Carper Joined With Bush To Vote for Military Commissions Act

In Delaware, incumbent Democrat United States Senator Tom Carper is being challenged by Republican Jan Ting. And so, being a progressive, I am naturally supporting… um… oh, hell.

Tom Carper Voted For TortureThis isn’t as simple a matter as I would hope for it to be. You see, Senator Tom Carper voted for the Military Commissions Act.

There is little that is so disappointing as working to advance the cause of a political party, only to observe that prominent members of that party don’t really stand for what you thought they stood for.

Tom Carper voted for torture.
Tom Carper voted against the Geneva Conventions.
Tom Carper voted against habeas corpus.
Tom Carper voted to give George W. Bush legal amnesty for war crimes.
Tom Carper voted for kangaroo courts to replace traditional standards of justice.
Tom Carper voted for hearsay evidence.
Tom Carper voted for imprisonment without a trial.
Tom Carper voted for trials that begin before the criminal investigation has been completed.

Tom Carper voted for all this and more horrific assaults against America’s values of liberty and justice when he voted for the Military Commissions Act. So, why should I care that Tom Carper is a Democrat running against a Republican? Why should freedom loving Delaware Democrats give Tom Carper the time of day, much less their votes?
