Delaware Democrats Have a Choice: Reject Tom Carper

Yesterday, I wrote about Delaware’s Senator Tom Carper abandoned the mainstream of the Democratic Party and embraced George W. Bush’s infamous new law, the Military Commissions Act. Carper’s acceptance of torture, accompanied with his rejection of the basic right of habeas corpus, and his opposition to the enforcement of the Geneva Conventions, combined with the new law’s get out of impeachment free card have caused outright disgust for Senator Carper among many Delaware Democrats.

But what can they do? Primary season is over, so it’s too late to kick Tom Carper off the Democratic Party line on the ballot.

Tom Carper Voted For TortureAh, but there’s something else that Delaware Democrats can do to show Tom Carper that they won’t stand for his disregard for the Constitution of the United States of America. They can write in the name of Karen E. Peterson on the ballot for United States Senator. Delaware Democrats are sick of Tom Carper’s disregard for the mainstream, traditional American values of liberty and justice, so this week, they have begun a campaign to write in the name of Karen E. Peterson, a Democratic state senator who has distinguished herself by her greater adherence to a progressive standard of legislative behavior than many other Democratic politicians are able to muster.

Good for you, Delaware Democrats. A vote is the currency of our democratic process, and when Democratic politicians like Tom Carper betray their Oath of Office, and fail to defend the Constitution from its domestic enemies as well as its foreign threats.
