Ignorance is the Better Part of Valor

I misremembered an aphorism this morning, to an interesting turn. Instead of “Discretion is the better part of valor,” I said, “Ignorance is the better part of valor.”

I think that my unconscious might be onto something here. Is ignorance indeed the better part of valor, and in what sense? Ignorance is the better part, not in terms of being the best part, but the largest part. In essence, my mind inadvertently blurted out that the largest part of courage is made up of ignorance.

One Response to Ignorance is the Better Part of Valor

  1. Iroquois Honky says:

Um, F.G., I think the “valor” here refers to romantic exploits. It’s a reminder not to ‘kiss and tell’. Ignorance is only good in the minds of those who are still looking for the 99 virgins. Wouldn’t most Americans rather snuggle up with someone who knows what they’re doing?
