What is wrong with the Democratic Party in the 6th congressional district of Virginia?
The Democrats in Virginia’s 6th congressional district just couldn’t be bothered to even run a candidate for Congress against incumbent Republican Bob Goodlatte this year. They left it instead to political independents Barbara Jean Pryor and Andre Peery to battle against Goodlatte. In 2006, the year when the Republican Congress has an approval rating of below 20 percent, they didn’t even give it a shot?
What is wrong with the Democrats of Virginia’s 6th congressional district? Please, if you’re on one of the Democratic Party committees from this district, I’d love to hear your excuses for not giving the voters a candidate.
Thanks to Barbara Jean Pryor and Andre Peery for picking up the slack. Of course, being independent candidates with no previously standing organizations to give them support, Pryor and Peery are not going to win the race. With 61 percent of the precincts in the district reporting results, Congressman Goodlatte has 74 percent of the vote. I’m not looking forward to seeing Representative Goodlatte walking the halls of the House of Representatives again, because Goodlatte is anything but moderate. In the last two years, Goodlatte earned a zero percent progressive rating. Not once did Bob Goodlatte take significant legislative action that American progressives could agree with.
Still, consider how the independent candidates did. Andre Peery has 14 percent of the vote so far, and Barbara Jean Pryor has 12 percent. That’s quite a remarkable achievement for independent candidates for Congress, facing an incumbent with lots of money to spend. Together, the independent candidates received 26 percent.
Just imagine what a Democratic candidate could have done. Keep imagining, because the Democrats of Virginia’s 6th congressional district didn’t show up for this election. What the hell is wrong with them?
