Actually, no, you don’t have to wait at all. The Republicans already have started their smear campaign, and…
Wait. I need to break in here and explain that I don’t use the term “smear campaign” lightly. I am not one of those people who, as every election rolls around, loudly decries the “negative campaigning” and “attacks on one’s opponents” that are out there. I don’t think a person should only say nice things about his or her opponent, because sometimes what a person’s opponent has done is not nice. I think negative campaigning has an important role — when it is substantively focused, when it has to do with a candidate’s current policy positions or past policy behavior, or when it has to do with demonstrable personal character flaws. Dennis Kucinich not being able to listen to others is a problem. And it’s a legitimate concern that Joy Padgett ran for Congress promising to fix Washington right after she ran her business into the ground.
But smearing is different. Smears are non-factual insults — either outright lies or just plain names that don’t have a basis in reality but nevertheless become associated with a person. Smears are about who people are rather than what they do. And smearers hope that if they just repeat something enough it will take on a reality of its own and have a real-world effect on an election. So when in the 2000 primary George W. Bush’s handlers went around South Carolina asking if people knew that John McCain had a black child, they didn’t care about the reality that McCain engaged in an open-hearted act when adopting a Bangladeshi girl from an orphanage. Bush’s team was manipulating voters’ racism — old-fashioned hatred of race-mixing — with the implicit suggestion that McCain was sleeping around, with some black woman no less! And so we ended up with Bush as the Republican nominee. We later ended up with Bush as president because his people convinced Americans that Bush would be a “great guy to have a beer with” (like that was ever going to happen), while Al Gore was “just plain boring.”
So the Republicans are starting up the smear machine again, and Kathleen Parker is an excellent practitioner of the art. In a column I read yesterday, Parker managed to drop the following remarks about Barack Obama in a manner of perfect “not that it’s important, but hey, I’m just saying” nonchalance:
- “‘What about his Muslim connections?’ one fellow asked at a recent holiday party.”
- “Obama’s father, in fact, was a Muslim in his native Kenya…”
- “He was not raised a Muslim. But, yes, his middle name is Hussein, as Republicans can’t stop mentioning. And, yes, his first name rhymes with Iraq. And, yes, his last name rhymes with Osama.”
- “With roots in Africa, Indonesia and the Midwest, he’s half-black, half-white; half-Muslim, half-Christian…”
Kathleen swears up and down in her column that none of this matters. So why does she drop the Muslim and the Hussein and the Muslim again and the Iraq and the Muslim yet again and the Osama and the Muslim one more time? Because it really doesn’t matter? Nobody in the newspaper business wastes column space on something they think doesn’t really matter.
This is classic slip-it-under the door passive-aggressive smear campaigning. And it doesn’t matter that Parker surrounds these Islam droppings with her “not that it matters, but…” lines. It’s like when your Aunt Gertrude from Georgia spends all of Thanksgiving dinner insulting relatives, getting away with it by adding a “well bless his heart” at the end. It’s like that guy who won’t shut up at the bar, who drinks two beers and starts spouting lines that begin with “Now, I’m not a racist, but…”. You know and they know just what they mean. Kathleen Parker knows exactly what she’s doing.
Looks like Obama isn’t so stupid when the cameras catch his pastor standing on the stage right next to him on election night sharing the victory limelight.
But is that true about his father being Muslim? Because in the Arab world you get your nationality as well as your religion from your father. I’ve always thought Obama’s personal history gives him an advantage on the world stage, but it would be nice to think he has an inside track with understanding Islam as well, or at least if the Arab world thinks he does.
Don’t forget the mother of Jordan’s King Abdullah is British…what church would that be? Of course Abdullah is Moslem like his father King Hussein, but the King is one of the few people able to represent the Moslem world to the west while talking some sense to American presidents.
Okay, okay, I know I said before Obama was Kennedy-esque, but I could see him playing a role like King Hussein as a go-between in the dialogue for peace in the Middle East.
Well, we’ve all had 6 years of Bush’s lies, bungling, and heartless ineptitude. They can try to smear all they want, but they have no leg to stand on when we merely have to point out how bad it has been with the Republicans in complete control of all aspects of the government. They’ve run up the deficit to record levels, botched both Katrina and the medicare prescription fiasco (just for starters), corruption is at an all-time high with Enron, Halliburton and Big Oil on the take to the tune of billions of dollars, not to mention the foreign policy nightmare we’ll be generations trying to repair and recover from, and, as usual, the environment has taken a back seat to politics, greed and policy. The Republicans have done more damage to this country and especially to our rights during their administrations than any terrorist could hope to accomplish.

The phrase “you go girl” is a common colloquialism used mostly between women, used to congratulate or encourage. In that sense, I used the phrase sarcastically. I used the word “granny” to underscore how filthy your mouth is Iroquois. Grannies are generally thought of as kind and warm hearted - not the kind of person who says “eat shit and die” to people who point out their inconsistencies in internet forums.

It is a description of the current state of equipment in an Indonesian hospital. And a search within that website of that Indonesian hospital comes up with absolutely no results pertaining to Obama. Even a google search within that domain shows nothing having to do with Obama.

When are people going to learn that just because “YOU” think things are right, doesn’t mean they are. That statement goes for everyone! I would rather have people fighting for my freedom, then being shot in the back of the head for saying something against where I lived. I would rather have a black president, that invites the Chicago Cubs, on an off day, to take a tour of the white house, then one who rips me off every time I go to the gas pump. I would rather be agnostic and opinionated, than use my faith as a shield to be prejudices. People take for granite what a good thing they have. You may not think it, but this is the only nation in the world that, treats their people with respect and consideration. I mean when little kids in school have to learn spanish because we have to accommodate people, who despite decades of living in america, only speak spanish. That is consideration. Or when a law is passed to keep people of the same sex from getting married and being happy, because it offends others, I do not know how much more respectful they can get. Come on people, get with the times. We are a nation of different nationalities, religions, sexual orientations, and beliefs, it is time to embrace change.
I would like to make a correction in the line “I would rather have a black president, that…” the chicago team was wrong, it was actually the white sox.
