I’m a bit embarrassed at my lack of good memory, but I have to admit that, in my recent writings about the Democratic candidates for President, I just plain forgot that Senator Christopher Dodd is running for President. It slipped my mind… for several weeks. There wasn’t any big news about the Chris Dodd for President campaign to jog my memory either, though I know that’s no excuse.
So, today, let me point out one good thing about the Christopher Dodd for President campaign. So far, Chris Dodd is the only presidential candidate to make repealing the Military Commissions Act a central issue. The Dodd for President campaign has set up a Restore Habeas web site in addition to the main campaign web site. Senator Dodd has introduced legislation in the Senate that would overturn some of the worst aspects of the Military Commissions Act.
Dodd’s two web sites are interconnected, of course. The Restore Habeas web site is paid for by Dodd’s presidential campaign committee. It looks as if Senator Dodd intends to draw people into his presidential campaign through the appeal of the Restore Habeas campaign, and draw people into his Restore Habeas campaign through the appeal of his presidential campaign. When I signed up to become a “citizen sponsor” of Dodd’s legislation to repeal the Military Commissions Act, I got the following message: “Click here to return to the ChrisDodd.com homepage.” ChrisDodd.com is the home page of the Dodd for President campaign.
I wonder when I’ll start getting the Dodd for President emails as a result of the citizen sponsorship of the Restore Habeas legislation. Still, whatever kind of promotional gimmicks are involved in this effort, Dodd still gets points for working on this important issue.
The other Democratic candidates for President are not doing enough to call attention to the serious threat to American democracy posed by the Military Commissions Act. Barack Obama, for example, doesn’t even mention the Military Commissions Act on his web site. Search for it, and all you’ll get from the Barack Obama for President campaign is the following message: “Your search - “military commissions act” site:barackobama.com - did not match any documents.”
Senator Obama needs to do better than that.

due to the suspension of habeas corpus (thanks to the Military Commissions Act) there is no legal recourse for detainees of the United States. the lawyers for hospital administrator Adel Hamad, a detainee at Guantanamo, thus took the unprecedented step of releasing video testimony on YouTube to the court of public opinion.
