The Carlyle Group and Blackstone Move and Shake With Unity08

Those paying attention to financial news may have noticed two pieces of recent information:

1. The Carlyle Group, a highly influential private equity investment fund drawing leadership from members of the old East Coast establishment, is gathering some $15 billion in money from large corporate groups to invest in a new hedge fund.

2. Blackstone Group, a private equity firm which specializes in taking over public companies and converting them into private ones, is itself going public with an initial offering of $4 billion in shares, which is only about 10% of its net worth.

These are two very large corporations that control very large amounts of money. They are shifting their behavior. At this time of change for the corporations, leaders of both the Carlyle Group and the Blackstone Group have donated money to Unity08.

These are investment firms that seek returns. It is reasonable to ask what sort of return these firms and their leaders expect from their investment in Unity08.
