As I wrote recently, I had been on the fence regarding the current situation with the firing of U.S. Attorneys by the Bush White House. It is the legal right, after all, of George W. Bush to hire and fire U.S. Attorneys, and that is important to recognize.
But legality is not the only thing that counts (or at least the only thing that should count) in America. Honesty is also crucial, especially in the Department of Justice, which is where the scandalous behavior of Alberto Gonzales has primarily occurred. I’m not just talking about the firing of U.S. Attorneys. Alberto Gonzales has written memos endorsing the use of torture as a policy instrument. Gonzales has been a major force behind the use of warrantless wiretapping in America, and under his watch the FBI has gone even beyond the law of the Patriot Act to snoop on Americans without structural constraint and without account.
Lawbreaker. Torture-lover. Warrantless wiretapper. And now Alberto Gonzales has out-and-out lied to the American people.
Such a man does not belong as the head of the U.S. Department of Justice. And yet, in the wake of all this, George W. Bush has just reaffirmed his support for Alberto Gonzales. That sheds a sad light on the moral values of George W. Bush, and it means that we cannot depend on any sense of shame within the Bush administration to push these people in the right direction.
So it’s time for the public to say it loudly and clearly. Alberto Gonzales, it’s time for you to resign. George W. Bush, if Alberto Gonzales won’t resign, it’s time for you to fire him. And if neither of you will act, then it is time for both of you to be impeached.
