It is a time of fear in the face of freedom, a time for the widening of previous roads and the opening of new paths, a time of an emptying country and swelling cities, yet a time when these paths are mined by knowing algorithms of the all-seeing eye. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection.

These are the times when maps fade and direction is lost. Forwards is backwards now, so we glance sideways at the strange lands through which we are all passing, knowing for certain only that our destination has disappeared. We are unready to meet these times, but we proceed nonetheless, adapting as we wander, reshaping the Earth with every tread. Behind us we have left the old times, the standard times, the high times. Welcome to the irregular times.

Call for Impeachment Using Sweatshop Labor

Filed under Ethics, Liberal Links, Shirts by jclifford at 2:47 pm

impeachment sweatshop laborWhich came first, Dennis Kucinich or After Downing Street? I don’t know, but After Downing Street is moving in support of the Articles of Impeachment that are being brought by Congressman Dennis Kucinich against Vice President Dick Cheney. So, if you want to understand the rationale for the impeachment attempt, and follow the developments in the effort, visit their site.

I’m going to ask you, however, not to buy their impeach Cheney promotional shirts. Why? Well, that’s simple. Almost all their shirts are made by companies that use sweatshop labor, with jobs that have been taken away from American workers and outsourced to overseas factories. Why? Well, these t-shirt manufacturers don’t think American workers are good enough to receive decent wages and benefits.

I don’t care how good the cause is. When I see a political group like After Downing Street exploiting sweatshop labor in order to further their cause, my respect for that group is diminished.

We have sold political merchandise at CafePress for years, but we chose a long while ago not to sell any shirts but the few that are made in the USA by American Apparel. For years, we’ve asked CafePress to feature more ethically made shirts, and fewer cheap sweatshop shirts, but our requests have gone unanswered.

So, this year, we’ve started moving much of our t-shirt collection over to Skreened, where every shirt is made by American Apparel, right here in the United States. The shirts at Skreened are less expensive too.

It just so happens that we have an impeach Cheney design in our catalog there. Personally, I think that it looks better. To my eye, ethical shirts are a lot more attractive than shirts soaked in someone else’s sweat.
