More House Democrats Oppose Military Commissions Act

On March 8, Representative Jerrold Nadler introduced Senator Chris Dodd‘s Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007 into the House of Representatives, under the bill number H.R. 1415. The legislation would undo most of the rotten provisions of the Military Commissions Act.

At first, only a handful of members of the House of Representatives co-sponsored H.R. 1415. Others were too timid, afraid to stick out their necks in the name of freedom. This morning, I’m glad to report that many Democrats in the House have decided that there’s no reason to be timid, that supporting the fundamental freedoms Americans have enjoyed for generations is not a controversial act.

As of this morning, there are 36 members of the House of Representatives co-sponsoring the Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007, many having added their names to the list last week. These 36 are:

Tom Allen of Maine
Michael Arcuri of New York
Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin
Lois Capps of California
Michael Capuano of Massachusetts
Lacy Clay of Missouri
Steve Cohen of Tennessee
Joe Courtney of Connecticut
Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut
Keith Ellison of Minnesota
Bob Filner of California
Barney Frank of Massachusetts
Jane Harman of California
Michael Honda of California
Sheila Jackson-Lee of Texas
Henry Johnson of Georgia
John Larson of Connecticut
Barbara Lee of California
Zoe Lofgren of California
Carolyn Maloney of New York
Betty McCollum of Minnesota
James McGovern of Massachusetts
Marty Meehan of Massachusetts
George Miller of California
Eleanor Holmes Norton of Washington D.C.
John Olver of Massachusetts
Ed Pastor of Arizona
David Price of North Carolina
Steve Rothman of New Jersey
Linda Sanchez of California
Jan Schakowsky of Illinois
Jose Serrano of New York
Pete Stark of California
John Tierney of Massachusetts
Peter Welch of Vermont
Lynn Woolsey of California

If your representative in Congress isn’t on the list, make a phone call, and ask, what gives?!?

One Response to More House Democrats Oppose Military Commissions Act

  1. Thurman Hart says:

Thanks for posting on this bill. It should be getting a lot of airplay, but doesn’t seem to get any.

Just as an FYI – part of the problem about getting sponsors is that there are literally thousands of bills out there at any given time. Mr. Rothman (who I work for) was able to co-sponsor this back in March. However, one of the jobs of the sponsor is to send “Dear Colleague” letters out to build support, and that didn’t happen until this week.

We always support people contacting their representatives, but you’ll generally get farther by asking if they know of a certain bill before telling them they need to “stick their neck out” and such.

    Keep fightin’.
