Mother Davis opens up the door to the warming springtime air as she looks at yesterday’s newspaper and considers,
It was almost five years ago now that Senator Hillary Clinton lost my support. When she voted in favor of the authorization for the Iraq War, in spite of the lack of any need for such a war, Hillary Clinton became part of the problem. She supported George W. Bush because it was the popular thing to do, even though it didn’t make sense. Clinton’s support for Bush’s new war suggested to me that she lacked the long-term vision necessary to be an effective President.
This week, Senator Clinton took an important step in restoring my trust. She joined Senator Robert Byrd in proposing legislation that would revoke the Iraq War authorization that gives George W. Bush the legal authority to keep American military forces active in Iraq, effective this October. The legislation is not yet formally introduced into the United States Senate, so we don’t know the details of the proposal yet, but as a general idea, it’s welcome and long overdue.
With this move, Senator Clinton shows that she understands that she made a terrible mistake when she helped President Bush start the war in Iraq. It’s taken her years to admit to her failure, but at least she’s doing it now.
A great deal of my distrust of Hillary Clinton remains. For one thing, she still needs to demonstrate that she understands the larger problem underlying her specific mistake. Does Senator Clinton have more of a vision of the future than the political expediency of the moment? Would she be opposing the military occupation of Iraq now if it were not the popular thing to do? I need to see some action that demonstrates Clinton’s ability to see beyond the trends of the moment into the ongoing themes that define the political identity of our nation.
In short, I need to see some indications that Hillary Clinton stands for some kind of political ideals, above and beyond her personal political goals.
I still can’t bring myself to support Hillary Clinton for President. However, with her support for revoking the authorization to wage war in Iraq, I can no longer dismiss her candidacy out of hand. I am now willing to give Hillary Clinton a second look. I suspect that many other voters like myself are similarly disposed.
Will Hillary Clinton follow up this one good move with another, or will this week’s proposal turn out to be an isolated gesture?
