Stand Against Military Commissions Act Strengthens

There is good news for the effort to repeal the Military Commissions Act. The last few weeks have brought more members of the House of Representatives on board as cosponsors of H.R. 1415, the Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007, which would undo the worst aspects of the Military Commissions Act.

The following are the latest members of the House of Representatives to support H.R. 1415:

Elijah Cummings of Maryland
Dan Davis of Illinois
Peter DeFazio of Oregon
Sam Farr of California
Kirsten Gillibrand of New York
Raul Grijalva of Arizona
Luis Gutierrez of Illinois
Jesse Jackson of Illinois
Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island
Edward Markey of Massachusetts
James Moran of Virginia

The Military Commissions Act establishes power of arbitrary imprisonment for the Presidents, an end to habeas corpus, kangaroo courts with such outrageously low standards of evidence that they would embarrass anyone but the most dedicated totalitarian, legal amnesty for war criminals, and the use of torture as officially sanctioned by the federal government of the United States of America. The Military Commissions Act is rotten through and through.

Go to the Progressive Patriots House Legislative Scorecard and check to see whether your member of the House of Representatives has yet co-sponsored H.R. 1415. If not, give your representative a call and leave a message asking for an end to their inaction in the face of genuine tyranny.

There are some well-known Democrats in the House of Representatives who have not co-sponsored H.R. 1415 yet. It’s time to call them out.

It’s a shame that there hasn’t been any additional support for the Senate counterpart to this legislation, S. 576, for a month. Where are the Great Leaders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on this?
