Support Tom Harkin. Shut Down Guantanamo.

I’ll keep this short and simple: Guantanamo is a shameful set of prisons set up in order to evade U.S. and international law and perfect the cruel science of torture. Guantanamo is polluting the reputation of the United States. The effort to keep the prisons of Guantanamo open is corroding American liberty.

Senator Tom Harkin has introduced a bill into the Senate that would shut down the Guantanamo Bay prisons within 120 days of the bill’s passage into law. The bill is listed by the Library of Congress as S. 1469. The bill’s title is the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility Closure Act of 2007.

The sad news about S. 1469: Although the bill was introduced to the United States Senate weeks ago, on May 23, 2007, so far not one single senator other than Tom Harkin has co-sponsored it.

You can take action right now to change that. Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121, and ask to be connected to the offices of your senators. Then, request politely that your senators sign on as co-sponsors to S. 1469.
