Kentucky and Louisiana Democrats in Congress Split On Iraq

There are two Democrats from Kentucky in the United States House of Representatives. From these two House Democrats, there are two separate approaches to dealing with the mess George W. Bush created in Iraq.

Congressman John Yarmuth, who was elected just last year, has chosen to oppose George W. Bush’s plans to prolong the American military occupation of Iraq with no end in sight. Last month, he voted against the legislation to throw billions of dollars Bush’s way, without any strings attached.

Congressman Ben Chandler, on the other hand, voted in favor of Bush’s plans for Iraq. Chandler voted to fund the same old policies of failure that have led to disaster, destruction and debt for more than four years. Ben Chandler abandoned the Democratic mandate to end the occupation of Iraq, and instead joined the Republicans to support George W. Bush.

If I were a Democrat in Ben Chandler’s district in Kentucky, I’d be looking for a better Democratic candidate to challenge Congressman Chandler in the 2008 primary.

I make the same suggestion to the Democratic constituents of Charles Melancon, who, like Ben Candler, voted in favor of giving George W. Bush billions of dollars in extra funding to prolong the occupation of Iraq.

Congressman Melancon is one of two Democratic members of the House of Representatives from Louisiana. The other House Democrat from Louisiana voted against throwing more money at the mess in Iraq. Unfortunately, that other Louisiana Democrat in the US House is William Jefferson, who will soon be standing trial for taking and making huge bribes.

Goodness me, Louisiana Democrats. You don’t just need to throw out the nasty Democrats who represent you in Congress. It looks like you need to throw out your Democratic Party officials as well, and replace them with some new leaders who will find more worthy candidates for Congress this time around.
