Oh, the fundamentalists are steaming in San Antonio, Texas, and it’s not from the humidity.
It seems that San Antonio Police Chief William McManus served recently as the grand marshal of the city’s gay pride parade. Being gay isn’t illegal in Texas. Having pride is revered in Texas. So what’s the problem? A local radio talk show host tells us the problem:
God calls Christians to be faithful — faithful to the plumb line of scripture. Scripture could not be more clear: homosexual behavior is described as an abomination. Homosexuals need Jesus as much as any other sinners, but they certainly don’t need city approval of their death style and of their sin. I have no problem with the police chief being at the parade if his role was to arrest people for indecent exposure, which apparently goes on with great frequency at these homosexual pride parade events. But he should never have accepted the invitation to serve as grand marshal, endorsing a behavior that is unnatural, unhealthy, and immoral.
Let’s ignore for a moment the question of how this anti-gay talk show host would have garnered the knowledge about what “apparently goes on with great frequency at these homosexual pride parade events” and move on to the news that fundamentalist Christians are organizing to pepper the San Antonio City Council tonight with protest against the Police Chief’s actions. They’re going to try to get him fired for not following Christian laws in the execution of his job.
Christofascism. Theocracy. Homohatred. That’s what’s going on in San Antonio. If you think a police chief should be able to march in a parade without getting fired for disagreeing with Yahweh, let it be known. No matter where you live, you can make a phone call to the San Antonio City Council at (210) 207-7040 and let your thoughts about the rule of law be known. Ask for the office of the Mayor, Phil Hardberger, to register your opinion. You can e-mail Mayor Hardberger here. To contact other members of the city council, click here.
If you live in or near San Antonio, please consider attending the City Council public session tonight. The City Council is meeting here:
Municipal Plaza Building
City Hall Complex
103 S. Main Ave
San Antonio, TX 78205
There’s a public comment period at 6 pm. I imagine showing up ahead of that time would help you get you get in the queue a bit more easily. But even if you don’t speak yourself, you can show your support for the police chief and your opposition to the imposition of Christian sexual law.
