The New York Times quotes unnamed Democratic Party politicians and insiders, and one named insider, saying that the decision by 41 Democrats in the House and 16 Democrats in the Senate to vote for S. 1927 won’t really matter in the end:
Democrats and political analysts said they expected the long-term political consequences of last week’s votes to be minimal because most of those who are irate would not be inclined to back Republicans.
“At the end of the day, how many choices do they have?” asked Stuart Rothenberg, a nonpartisan political analyst, about liberal voters. “How many Democratic primaries are going to be determined by this? Base voters have a way of complaining, being angry, of holding their breath until they turn blue. But I don’t see it as having any real consequence.”
Rothenberg, the consummate, comfortable, nattily-attired insider, thinks you’re a well-trained dog who might complain when Democrats participate in the gutting of the constitution and the implementation of a surveillance state, but who will come when called. Rothenberg thinks you’ll vote Democrat like a good dog.
Some of us don’t have a Democratic representative. I live in Republican Deborah Pryce’s district, so my decision is easy. Unless she has a complete transformation, I’ll cast my vote against her.
Some of us have a solidly progressive Democratic representative in DC, like Raul Grijalva or James McGovern or Lynn Woolsey. Those of us in that situation also have an easy choice: to support their re-election.
But those who cherish constitutional rights and yet live in districts with anti-constitution, anti-liberty, pro-surveillance Democrats have a challenge on their hands. Does this describe you? Stuart Rothenberg, the smug consultant in the business suit, says you’re a good dog. Rothenberg says you’ll roll over and expose your stomach for another kick. Rothenberg says you’ve gotten used to your leash.
Well, is it true?
hmmmmm
so if there is NO difference i might as well not dump the republican party which i had planned to do.do democrats want to BET on that?
if i am going to have fascist rule i might as well go republican at least then the over reach will continue and become more oppressive?
br3n
No, Br3n. The issue is intra-party for the Democrats. Stuart Rothenberg sniffs with disdain at the idea that grassroots Democratic voters could challenge a sitting Democrat, no matter how morally corrrupt, in a Democratic primary. Insiders like Rothenbert are essentially against the Democratic Party being democratic.
There could be Democratic challengers with more progressive integrity, but Rothenberg doesn’t like that idea because it places more power in the Democratic voters, and less with elitists like himself.
ty for the explanation
it still doesnt make for any easy decisions for anyone.this is terrible sad times.
i always decided on very easy issues that mattered the most such as abortion and similar.it is now more confusing as my thinking is that abortion doesnt even seem to matter to me right now.the moral fiber of the country and what it stands for is threatened by something so corrupt and evil it outweighs all other issues.
as a christian torture cannot be accepted nor made excuses for.wiretapping for what reason that is logical?secret courts need to be eliminated.cia needs restruction from ground up.fbi also needs lots of work.the dept of justice needs to clean from top down.when people that are lawyers try to tell me that gonzo is doing just fine then i have to doubt their integrity also.
i want to see the danger to us here in the usa one event 5+ years ago?
