Karl Rove Quitting: What’s The Real Reason?

Open discussion thread:

Karl Rove has announced that he will be resigning from the Bush White House at the end of this month.

“I’ve got to do this for the sake of my family,” Rove says. Of course, that’s just thinly-veiled D.C.-speak that political professionals give to say that they don’t want to talk about why they’re leaving.

We don’t know the real reason Karl Rove is resigning. What could it be?

Could it be related to the sudden push to give Alberto Gonzales new spy powers through the Protect America Act, with Bush demanding that he get those powers before Congress goes into recess in August? Or, is the timing just a coincidence?

This is a clear case of a rat leaving a sinking ship…

I heard something on Morning Edition that suggested that this was a good time for Rove to step down simply because he’s got a narrow window of opportunity when he’s not being investigated for anything, so he can step down without looking like he’s Resigning In Disgrace.

Of course, it also gives him the chance to go work for one of the Republican candidates for 2008…assuming he can find one dumb enough to associate himself that tightly with Bush.

Oh, can Congress put him away for war crimes now, or election fraud, treason (the Plame game), lying under oath, subverting the Constitution, or anything at all? Can Bush just wave his magic pardon wand and make it all go away? It would be so great to nail these bastards one at a time, but maybe we have to wait until Bush leaves office. Hopefully we can then watch him hang too, but my guess is he’ll be made into a hero (ala Reagan) and we’ll be left to pick up the pieces and try to re-establish some semblance of a working government (while the economy goes to hell in a handbasket full of sub-prime loan notes and China starts selling worthless dollars in huge batches, and while the environment spins ever further out of control and our infrastructure continues to deteriorate).

He said his hand was forced now when the White House chief of staff, Joshua B. Bolten, recently told senior aides that if they stayed past Labor Day he would expect them to stay through the rest of Mr. Bush’s term.

I’ve since heard (on All Things Considered) that Rove said he doesn’t expect to work on the 2008 campaign. It wouldn’t be a great surprise if he changed his mind, of course.

chimpy said “I will be following you soon.” Did the investigators finally come up with the silver bullet? Did someone finally spill the beans? I guess yes.
