The Clinton Standard

progressive writer peregrin woodDefending presidential candidate Hillary Clinton against criticism from fellow Democrats who accuse her of trying to repeat her husband’s policy of gaining political advantage by peeling off elements of the Democratic Party in alliance with the Republican Party through the process of triangulation, Clinton spokesperson Mo Elleithee said, “The fact is that most Americans believe that Bill Clinton was a good president who moved the country forward.”

Is that a fact? I know I believe that Bill Clinton was a better president than George H.W. Bush or George W. Bush, but I don’t think that I’d categorize Bill Clinton as a good president. As I remember it, he made an awful lot of mistakes and missed an awful lot of opportunities. Surely, we can do a lot better than a repeat of the Clinton years.

Some may say that it’s a mistake to criticize Hillary Clinton as a presidential candidate based upon her husband’s presidency. I say, however, that Hillary Clinton herself has invited this critique by promoting herself as someone who can return America to what she describes as the good old days under President Bill Clinton.

it is a mistake to judge someone based on their spouse’s performance — it is not a mistake to judge someone based on their stated ideals, goals, and perceptions of history.

if Hillary’s best *aim* is to do only as well as Bill did… sheesh. Don’t get carried away on the dream, there Hil. Dreams can be heady stuff.

    er, so to speak.
