Stephen Colbert, satirical genius with a swooping eagle and rippling flag on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report, announced last night that he is running for President of the United States in 2008. He’ll actually be on the ballot in South Carolina, his home state, and one of the earliest primary states in the 2008 election season.
If you’re like many Americans, and disgusted to some extent with pretty much all of the serious presidential candidates, supporting Stephen Colbert is actually a quite intelligent choice. Colbert has the ability to point out the absurdities that the presidential candidates of 2008 of both major political parties deliver with a straight face. There is no one like a comedian to get people to see things in a new light, and when it comes to the irrational fear that has been induced by the War On Terror, there’s no better antidote for fear than a good, hearty belly laugh.
