Many who support right wing politicians have good intentions. They’re motivated by the belief that they’re helping to save lives, in spite of the right wing’s pro-war agenda, because right wing politicians oppose the legalization of abortion.
Abortion certainly does kill, though the nature of the killing is disputed, depending on the developmental stage of the embryo.
The implicit assumption in the Pro-Life movement is that, because abortion kills, laws against abortion will stop the killing, or at least reduce it. That assumption, it turns out, is incorrect.
A recent study by the Guttmacher Institute and the World Health Organization, published in The Lancet, found that rates of abortion are the same in countries where abortion is illegal as in countries where abortion is legal. (Source: Associated Press, October 12, 2007)
The conclusion is obvious: Laws against abortion do not stop people from getting abortions. Whether you believe that abortion is immoral or not, the right wing proposal, to ban abortion, is not a solution that will work.
