Since When Is Upholding the Rule of Law Divisive?

The National Lawyers Guild writes that “impeachment is the only constitutional method to protect Americans from a president intent on abusing power, violating the constitution, violating the laws, and breaching public trust.”

peregrin woodThe tool of impeachment was designed just for the sort of historical moment the USA finds itself in right now, with an out-of-control, wildly unpopular President who holds himself above the law, with contempt for the Constitution and the liberties it protects.

Yet, the Democratic leadership in Congress insists on squelching the reassertion of the authority of the Constitution and the rule of law. The leadership of the Democratic Party calls the mere idea of impeachment divisive.

The Democratic Party needs to be reminded that assertion of Constitutional authority does not divide America. On the contrary, it is what keeps America from falling apart. There is no better reason than that to reform the Democratic Party be electing a progressive candidate for President in 2008.
