It is a time of fear in the face of freedom, a time for the widening of previous roads and the opening of new paths, a time of an emptying country and swelling cities, yet a time when these paths are mined by knowing algorithms of the all-seeing eye. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection.

These are the times when maps fade and direction is lost. Forwards is backwards now, so we glance sideways at the strange lands through which we are all passing, knowing for certain only that our destination has disappeared. We are unready to meet these times, but we proceed nonetheless, adapting as we wander, reshaping the Earth with every tread. Behind us we have left the old times, the standard times, the high times. Welcome to the irregular times.

strange hourglass

The Tale of Three Little Senate Kittens

Three kittens got spacey,
and supported Mukasey,
Then they began to cry,
“Oh Voter dear,
We sadly fear,
Our scruples we have lost.”

“He supported torture
And what is much more, sir
He rejected rule of law.
We could have said no
But he smiled at us so…
Hey — could you give us some cash?”

What! Lost your scruples,
Is that really trueples?
Then you shall have no cash!
Oh no, Oh no, Oh no,
No, you shall have no cash.

The three little kitties,
Got wound up in bitties,
And they began to cry,
“Oh, voter dear,
See here, see here,
Now our scruples we have found!”

“We agree with you mostly
In speeches we’ll get boastly
And like liberals we will sound.
Oh, sure, it’s too late
But hey, now we sound great
So — can we have your vote?”

What! Found your scruples,
Is that really trueples?
But when there’s a vote again,
Will you ditch them like that
On the drop of a hat?
Tell me, what will you do then?

“Dear dear dear, well well well,
It’s too early to tell,”
The kittens began to squirm.
“We will reserve the right
to do as we might
With the turning of the worm.
But purr, purr, purr,
Oh, let us have your vote.”

What! Too early to tell?
You just might as well
sell your soul out in the square.
If your scruples you’ll ditch
At an impulse or twitch
We can tell you no longer care.

You bad fickle cats,
It is time; that is that.
You shall not have my vote.
Oh no, Oh no, Oh no,
You shall not have my vote.

  1. Ah, the kittens:

    “He supported torture
And what is much more, sir
    He rejected rule of law”

Obviously, he supported torture. After all, even though he STATED he was against torture, said that waterboarding was deplorable, and testified to that multiple times, he supported torture. Wait, no, he was totally against torture. You must be using the logic:

“If you’re not with us, you’re against us”

    translated to

“If you’re not with us in stating that torture is illegal, then you’re against us by supporting torture”

Sounds a lot like our President right there in regard to our allies and our wars.

But hey, don’t let me prevent the logical fallacies from continuing. After all, I don’t have the ability to read Mukasey’s mind, so I don’t know or have any reason to think that he loves torture and cuts up prisoners in his spare time for fun.
