The American prisons at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba are a stain on the global reputation of the United States of America. By creating a special American zone which is purported to be outside both international law and American law, the American government has essentially declared that laws and constitutions are merely suggestions. Whatever you think about what’s actually going on at the prisons of Guantanamo, their mere existence is a signal of totalitarian ideology in Washington, D.C. – the idea that the President of the United States has the power to overrule any law anywhere at any time that he personally deems necessary.
Some people are just fine with that. The rest of us actually care about freedom, and believe that the United States Constitution is worth more than the paper that it has been printed on.
In Atlanta, Georgia today, a group of people who still give a damn about freedom will be holding a rally against the national shame that is Guantanamo. They will assemble at 12:00 Noon at Colony Square, the corner of 14th and Peachtree.
If you’re in the area, and you still believe that the President of the United States is not an all mighty dictator, please join them.
