The Buzz About Clorox’s Bees

clorox burts bees selloutBurt’s Bees no longer belong to Burt. They’re now Clorox’s Bees. There’s nothing in the company news or online history to indicate a change. Still, squirreled away on the Burt’s Bees FAQ is the following statement:

“On October 31, 2007, the Clorox Company announced their intention to buy Burt’s Bees. This pending merger is expected to close in December 2007, at which point we will be part of the Clorox Company’s family of products.”

It’s 2008 now, and the merger is pending no longer. Yet, Burt’s Bee’s has hidden the news of the Clorox purchase of their company, as if it’s something that they’re not too eager for consumers to know about.

peregrin woodBurt’s Bees web site claims that, “We believe companies should be transparent.” Why is it then, that the company’s web site tries so hard to obscure the big change it’s decided to make?

I guess they didn’t want to risk getting stung by corporate lawyers from Clorox… or by their customers.

Hmmm…you’re not looking around the Burt’s website very deeply. The FAQ section addresses the merger and the blog (under “Community”) has some great entries. Besides, I checked the ingredient lists on a few of their products and don’t see bleach being added to any yet.

Not that Clorox is wonderful but I’m tired of seeing their bleach attacked. That product’s saved thousands (maybe millions!) of lives. Gte the facts at http://www.clorox.com/our_story/understanding_bleach

I, for one, will be keeping a close eye on both Burt’s and Clorox in the coming months – - while continuing to use products from both as they make life better for me & my family. I hope to also see Clorox turning a little greener over time. There’s always hope, right? :)

  2. Uh, you’re not looking at this short article very carefully. I mentioned the FAQ. In the news section, in the history section, on the front page, NOTHING.

You really have to dig around the web site to find anything about the purchase of Burt’s Bees by Clorox. If the Burt’s Bees executives really believed that the buyout by Clorox reflected positively on their company, they would be proudly displaying the event, not obscuring it.

On the ingredients, the sellout only took place a few weeks ago. Corporate change takes a bit longer than that.

Historically, hope has not fared very well in the face of this sort of merger. :(

I’m not all that impressed with Burt’s Bees ingredients. So what if beeswax is “natural”. Poop is natural too. Wax actually takes moisture OUT of your skin. The stuff also has lanolin, a heavy animal oil that some people find the odor objectionable. Also heavy tropical coconut oil and sunflower oil. If you want something really nice, go for the pricey ayurvedic products with sesame oil.

No advantage to associating the Clorox name with skin products. Chlorine bleach is synonymous with free radicals, very damaging to living cells. Of course chlorine bleach is also a cheap and lo-tech way to make drinking water safe.

For lips I recommend Neutrogena Lip Moisturizer SPF 15 in a stick. If you have some serious kissing to do, it will take your lips from cracked and scratchy to soft and desirable in literally seconds, no matter your age. Give some to your partner and see global warming in action.

I am in the process of replacing all the items confiscated in the airports’ new homeland idiocy “three-ounce rule”–losing my hand lotion on the outbound trip and my toothpaste and shampoo on the return trip.

I love Dead Sea salts. There’s nothing more rejuvenating to skin than sitting on the banks of the Dead Sea with some of the local mud on your skin, then bobbing around on the water to rinse it off. I enjoyed the local dollar store’s Dead Sea minerals with green tea lotion made in Israel and have just brought home their Shea butter product. You see Shea butter offered at a premium price in all the Islamic websites along with black seed products (which The Prophet recommended). I can hardly wait to try the Shea butter.

balm23, do you work for Clorox?

  5. Fruktata says:

Oh, no. I’m sure that balm23 is just an average, ordinary citizen who loves Clorox brand bleach products, just like all the rest of us. I, for one, am so, so, so, so, so glad that balm23 has had the chance to speak for the majority of bleach-loving Americans.

If there’s one thing that’s wrong with America, it’s that our institutions of bleach are under attack from people who don’t want to be bleached.

I am so tired of seeing bleach attacked! It makes me weary to see all these attacks from the anti-bleach crowd. Why do they hate our white cotton napkins?
