In the 2000 presidential election, it was the Republicans who disenfranchised voters, with the Republican Secretary of State setting up obstacles for voters in Democratic areas, stripping eligible voters of their registrations, and refusing to actually count the full vote.
It’s darkly ironic then, that eight years later, it’s the Democratic Party that is disenfranchising voters.
There’s a Democratic presidential primary being held all right, but it really doesn’t count. The national Democratic Party has stripped Florida of its delegates to the national presidential convention that will decide the party’s presidential nominee. The reason? Florida Democrats didn’t play along with the power games of national party insiders.
So, although some Florida Democrats will turn out tonight, many won’t, knowing that they don’t have a democratic say in the Democratic Party any more. It’s a low down dirty shame, and it’s not the way for the Democrats to win back Florida in 2008.
