Give A Man A Fish…

I am so, so, so, so, tired of reading the aphorism Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life. Let’s try some alternatives.

Give a man a fish, and and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he still won’t have enough money for a fishing license, so when he tries to fish, they’ll throw him in prison.

Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Then, he will get hungry again, and then you won’t have a fish to give him, and then it’s Donner Party time!

Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will die of mercury poisoning.

Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he might eat again once in a while, but what with the overfishing of the oceans, he probably won’t be able to catch enough fish to survive. Nonetheless, you can stand and watch his misery with a feeling of superiority, knowing now that if he suffers and dies it is his own fault, and throughout it all you will not have to share what’s yours with anybody else.

Any other suggestions?

Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Give a fish a man, and he’ll eat for weeks!

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. Teach Vin Diesel to fish and he will rid the ocean of all perceivable life forms.

I love the Vin Diesel facts.

  3. Marcia Ford says:

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will spend the mortgage payment and the kids’ tuition on rods and reels and worm binders and boats and weekends with his bass-lovin’ buddies and everything falls apart until someone comes along and teaches a woman to fish and she and the kids have a fighting chance at eating for a lifetime.

Oh, and I hate that aphorism as much as you do. I once heard a pastor use that expression to justify not helping the poor. Puh-lease.

  5. Tom says:

Give a man a fish or teach a man to fish, they’re still eating fish which live in our pollution and so these fishermen and all they feed are consuming the same toxins that they’re allowing (or are ignorant of) to be dumped into their environment constantly both locally and globally.
    Mercury, pcbs, heavy metals. Enjoy!

Don’t worry, some corrupt “agency” will declare all this to be “acceptable.”
