![]() | Clandestine Underground Anti-War Group Issues Press Release? |
What does it mean for a “clandestine organization located within the United States forging an underground movement for the people” to be issuing a press release? I think it means that the organization is neither clandestine nor underground. Here’s what showed up in our e-mail inbox this morning:
We are a clandestine organization located within the United States forging an underground movement for the people. We are deeply affected by the events following September 11th and the genocide in the Middle east. Our intention is to disrupt the illegal empire and stop the war machine from functioning from the inside. We will engage the enemy, take advantage of vulnerabilities and expose every weakness. We encourage the people to standup and stand strong with confidence, leadership, and continue organizing against every form of struggle.
The politicians in America will continue to wage war for glory and the pigs will not stop, until they are jailed for their crimes against humanity.
We call on all free nations of the world, to unite, in our struggle against tyranny and imperialism…
Continue organizing against every form of struggle? I don’t think that’s what the author meant to write.
That’s classic 5th Red Brigade of the AntiZionist Montana Militia talk right there, it is. I can just see the grainy footage in my head of the videotape dropped off in front of WMUZ-TV offices, showing somebody sitting at a desk in a beret in front of a map, with someone else standing very serious-like with a raised fist off to the side. We DEMAND an end to the Chicken Dance at wedding receptions, and an immediate liberation of bovine brothers by 11 PM, Central Time, or we will destroy a mailbox! Viva Che!
Yes, it’s something straight out of the Weather Underground except they’ve sent out a press release, which is tres Madison Avenue. They’ve got a return e-mail address for inquiries and everything.
And then they link to a website, something else that isn’t either clandestiney or undergroundy. 5yearstoomany.org calls for something altogether different:
–>Take Action in the Nation’s Capitol on Wednesday, March 19
March 19th will mark the beginning of the 6th year of the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Enough is enough! We are organizing creative, nonviolent acts of civil disobedience in Washington DC to interrupt business as usual for those promoting and profiting from war and empire building. Focusing on the pillars of warÂ, our actions will take place at multiple sites, demonstrating the real costs of war and offering visions for a more just and sustainable world, a world at peace.

- If your organization would like to help mobilize people from your area to go to DC for March 19, please email dc@5yearstoomany.org.Â

That’s classic nonviolent mass movement organization right there.
There are two faces of this organization. It looks to me like someone has taken it upon themselves to write a manifesto from the basement that isn’t representative or responsible. If you have any insight on this effort and would like to help clarify matters, please share what you know with a comment here.
It is a time of fear in the face of freedom, a time for the widening of previous roads and the opening of new paths, a time of an emptying country and swelling cities, yet a time when these paths are mined by knowing algorithms of the all-seeing eye. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection.

In a bad Columbo impersonation: “Waddiya wanna bet dale be called ‘terrorists’” [while the real terrorists and their actual criminal activities are sitting in the driver’s seat of government and have pulled all their henchman aboard for the ride (down and out) of their lives]?
