![]() | Arkansas Politics Corrupt Without Democracy |
What a tidy little setup they’ve got down in Arkansas - a tidy set up for the people in power, that is. It’s not such a great deal for the voters.
The Arkansas Republicans are conservative, but then on the other hand, the Arkansas Democrats are too. So, the Arkansas Democratic Party dominates, but with the kind of old Democratic Party ideology that favored slavery around the time of the Civil War. The Arkansas Republicans seem to be just fine with that.
There are five congressional races this year in Arkansas, and I can tell you exactly who’s going to win in each race. That’s not because I’m some kind of super genius. It’s because there isn’t any actual race in any of these races. Not one of the five members of Congress up for re-election in Arkansas this year has any candidate from the other major political party running against them.
Arkansas voters don’t have much of a choice. In three of the five campaigns, there is only one candidate running. In the other two races, incumbents Senator Mark Pryor and Representative John Boozman are opposed only by candidates from the Green Party of Arkansas. I am thankful to the Green Party candidates for running at all, but we all know what a record of electoral success the Green Party has accumulated.
In no congressional campaign is there any competition between a Democrat and a Republican. The Republican and Democratic parties of Arkansas seem to have come to a dirty little understanding: They won’t fight against each other, because they both promote the same corrupt right wing politics.
The best progressives in Arkansas can do is vote with their feet, and move the heck out of Arkansas.
It is a time of fear in the face of freedom, a time for the widening of previous roads and the opening of new paths, a time of an emptying country and swelling cities, yet a time when these paths are mined by knowing algorithms of the all-seeing eye. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection.
