Hillary Clinton, who will not receive the Democratic Party nomination, is claiming that she has won the majority of the popular vote.
That’s true… if you do not count the votes of any people who voted against Clinton in Michigan, and if you do not count the votes of Iowa, or Maine, or Nebraska, or Nevada, or Idaho, or Washington, or the Texas caucuses. So Clinton’s claim is true, basically, if you are a codfish. If you include these states, Barack Obama wins the popular vote, and he is likely to expand on his popular vote lead with the final two votes in Montana and South Dakota.
Which doesn’t mean anything for the nomination, since that is won by delegates. Barack Obama has already picked up two more superdelegate endorsements this morning, and he needs just 44 more delegates to indisputably win the nomination. Hillary Clinton needs 202 delegates to win the nomination, and there are only 232 delegates left to win (31 delegates in Montana and South Dakota on Tuesday, and 201 superdelegates). That’s right: in order to win the nomination, Hillary Clinton has to get 87% of the remaining superdelegates.
The point: even if you are a Hillary Clinton supporter who thinks the popular vote matters more than the delegate count and that — to use her phrase “every vote counts” — if you actually count every vote, Barack Obama is ahead in that metric. Returning to reality land, Barack Obama is also ahead in the delegate count, and unless 87% of the remaining delegates go to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama will be the nominee.
My first two choices didn’t win the nomination, and I’m a bit miffed at that missed potential, but screwing up my face like a psychic time-bending superhero isn’t going to change that. You can be miffed that your favorite candidate did not win the nomination, but that doesn’t make your candidate win the nomination. Barack Obama will win the nomination.
Fantastically put! Many thanks for saying it plaining and correctly.
SB
When the “talking heads” on TV hear form the Clinton campaign that she leads the popular vote, why don’t they simply say, “Sure she does if you assume Obama receives “zero” votes in Michigan and you don’t count the votes in Iowa, etc, etc”
The Clinton team continues the lie, why not hammer home the truth….
It’s time to hammer home John McCain. Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee.
How do you determine the “popular” vote in caucus states? The general election is not going to be restricted to party elites.
Gee, the same way you do in a primary, anonymous. The caucuses were not restricted to party elites either.
No, no, Peregrin, didn’t you see the brown-shirted thugs that kicked out anyone trying to enter a caucus who didn’t have a friend on the DNC? It was an elite setup, complete with brain scans and everything. You had to wear a tin foil hat to counteract the elite caucus security systems.
I note that there Sen. Edwards (and others)won a number of votes in various primaries. If these votes are factored in, even using Hillaryworld math she has a (tiny) plurality of votes case, but not a majority.
In any event, she can console herself on her glorious victory while working on her seminal book examining the achievements of President Gore!
I WILL KEEP SAYING THIS, PEOPLE. RUSH LIMBAUGH IS THE ONE TO GO AFTER. WE CAN BLAME HIM WITH HIS CHAOS. On March 4th he and Glen Beck kept telling Republicans to vote for HILLARY. And I quote Rush “I KNOW IT’S GOING TO MAKE YOU VOMIT TO VOTE FOR HILLARY. BUT BILL AND HILLARY’S FUNERAL MUSIC WILL PLAY. NOT JUST YET THOUGH. I’M HAVING FUN WITH THIS. THIS IS SO MUCH FUN CAUSING TROUBLE FOR THE DEMOCRATS. OVER 800,000 REPUBLICANS VOTED FOR HILLARY SINCE THE MARCH 4TH PRIMARIES WITH NO INTENTION OF VOTING FOR HER IN NOVEMBER. THIS IS SO SAD. RUSH ALSO SAID HILLARY NEEDS TO THANK HIM FOR TEXAS, OHIO, INDIANA AND PENNSYLVANIA. THIS IS A SAD DAY IN AMERICA. GET RID OF CHEATING YOUR WAY INTO THE WHITE HOUSE. LOOK WHAT THE CHRISTIAN GEORGE MCCAIN BUSH HAS DONE FOR AMERICA. NEED I SAY MORE.
Why does no one ever consider where Obama obtained his delegates? States like S.Carolina N.Carolina Georfia Alabama Utah Missouri Mississippi etc rarely vote for a democrat in the general elections , yet these are the states that are giving Obama his lead.
The DNC will be doing the nation a diservice and the party a diservice if they nominate Obama. He cannot win,. Bigotry bias etc are by no means dead in this country, the swiftboaters will make hash out of Obama, and we will be stuck again with a totally corporate controlled govt. I will vote for Obama if he is nominated however he cannot win.
Clinton has shown courage and tenacity in her struggle against the media and will make a fine president.
Yes, Laukaitis, when she voted in favor of helping George W. Bush to invade Iraq, she sure showed tenacity… in the face of a complete lack of evidence that the war was necessary. Is that the material you think makes a “fine president”?
If Barack Obama is such a weak, helpless candidate, how come Hillary Clinton hasn’t been able to beat him? How come, with all the nasty, racist garbage thrown at Barack Obama by Clinton supporters, Barack Obama is still standing strong?
Since no one is counting Florida I guess we don’t have to hear anymore shit about Al Gore winning huh? Take it to court its what you guys are good at!!
No, sweetums, that’s what James Baker did.
Actually, Sugarpants after the Supreme Court of Florida tried to change election rules and have only the three most liberal counties recount until Gore won, then it went to court.
Cherrylips, who stopped the recount? And who went to court to stop votes from being counted?
Pixiedust, at no point did Gore have enough votes and then the libs tried to block military votes.
Who stopped the recount? And who went to court to stop votes from being counted?
