Ban Jet Skis And No Offshore Drilling Is Needed

Republicans in Congress keep on blathering on about how we need to legalize offshore oil drilling along every mile of the American coastline and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in order to reduce the price of gasoline.

That’s bull.

You want to increase the supply of gasoline in the United States? Ban jet skis. Every year across the United States huge numbers of Americans haul jet skis along the highways to the water’s edge, and then ride their personal watercraft around in circles, annoying everyone in sight with the annoying, mosquito-like buzzing sound these machines make.

ban jet skis no offshore drillingJet skis get, depending on the model, somewhere between 1 and 5 miles per gallon of gasoline – and that’s not counting all the extra gasoline that’s used just to haul them around. All that gasoline goes for no practical purpose. It’s burned up just for the entertainment of people who like to go vroom.

If the Republicans were serious about bringing down the cost of gasoline, they would introduce legislation to ban jet skis, thus increasing the supply of gasoline.

Of course, we all know that the Republicans don’t really care about bringing down the cost of gasoline. They’re just looking for a new excuse to do what they’ve always wanted to do – to give cheap oil drilling leases on public lands so that big corporations can make even more obscene profits.

    For every person who has a fun ride on a jet ski there are twenty people on the shore whose nice time on the shore is bothered. You want to go fast, people? Try running. You want a thrill? Go surfing or windsurfing or boogie boarding. Jet skis are wasteful mechanisms of inconsideration and their existence is proof of some degree of superficial vanity among us. Blech. Even without the incredibly low mileage, blech.

    #1 Global warming is a MYTH…accept it…get over it…..the things that are happening to this planet are BEYOND OUR CONTROL…..we have what? 200-300 years of “scientific” research about our environment….and we think that THAT is how things are and should be ALL the time when in actuality, environmental conditions fluctuate and change all on their own…..the main causes of carbon emissions? Decomposing plant and animal life, forest fires, and volcanoes……..So I guess we should ban them too huh?

    How come whining hippies proclaim the earth to be a living thing (which I agree with), and then start flipping out when that living thing changes? Isn’t change the only constant?

    Congress has the constitutional authority to ban things like cigarettes or jet skis, as interstate commerce and for the general welfare.

    I love how you think that legislation written by a representative legislature is what you think led the American colonies to break away from the British empire. That’s so silly it tickles.

    Jet skis are God given? Then how come you have to pay Kawasaki for one? Is Kawasaki God?

    Where is your proof or statistics that banning jet skis will even make a dent in the consumption of gas on a national or global scale? I think your a bit off.

    Why stop at jet skis? Why not ban all personal boats? If you really want to save gas ban all use of a car for any trip under 5 miles. Heck, people can easily walk that. Let’s also ban all use of electricity from 10 pm till 6 am. Think of the money, oil and coal we can save.

    These are very stupid ideas but they are no where near as stupid as this article.

        Often Jet Skiers also failed to slow to 6 miles per hour within 150 feet of the beach line as was mandated prior to the ban.

        “I’ve talked to the police department, who’ve said the number of calls they’ve received have gone down tremendously,” Desiata said. “I’ve talked to the people who live on the beach, who say they’re much happier now that they’re not getting woken up and people throwing their trash on their property.

        In Bridgewater, jet skiers break the rules – and break their bones:

        Lakeside residents weren’t really surprised by a jet ski accident on Lake Nippenicket on July 22 that left a teenage girl with a fractured femur and a teenage boy with an injured ankle. They have long argued that jet ski use on the lake is dangerous.

        More surprising is the fact that jet skis continue to buzz the lake even though a 2003 Town Meeting banned them, and the state attorney general’s office upheld the ban.

        Considering the noise, pollution, reckless behavior and the likelihood that the only people who really enjoy these things are those who ride them, I’d say it’s time New York banned them from its recreation areas also.

        Findings of the state of Alaska:

        Complaints led to an extensive public process involving three public meetings and two formal public hearing on the proposed regulations. Petitions both supporting and opposing the regulations were received along with comments from 1,850 individuals and organizations. Approximately 70 % of the public testimony received supported a total ban on jet ski use within the Kachemak Bay Critical Habitat Area. In addition, the Homer City Council passed a resolution requesting that the State of Alaska consider prohibition or restriction on the use of jet skis in Kachemak Bay.

        Jet skis are fundamentally different than conventional motorboats, which are still allowed and are consistent with other uses of the critical habitat area and state park. An extensive review of the scientific literature regarding impacts of jet skis on wildlife has revealed that the characteristics of jet ski use make these vessels more disruptive to wildlife than other types of watercraft. Scientific observations of jet skis cite high noise levels, high speeds, erratic movements, activity in shallow water, and the tendency to be operated in groups.

        These vessels are marketed and used as “thrill craft” to a far greater degree than conventional motorboats. This contrasts with use of conventional motorized vessels in Kachemak Bay, which are generally used as a means of transportation to fish, hunt, or view wildlife.

        When I’m enjoying the tranquility on a beautiful beach day I really hate jet skis and their braindead riders going round and round in circles basically being annoying tools.

BTW yes I have done slalom races with Dolphins…and jumped and surfed waves them. They look me in the eye while we ride… am not exagerrating. I also mountain bike, surf and snowboard and ski, activities that do not use fuel( oh wait the lifts use fuel…guess we need to close all the ski lifts). There are no male impowerment issues with me…I just like to ride the earth’s surfaces, water dirt and snow at speed. Most PWC’s are eco friendly 4 strokes now. And when your beloved hypocrate Nacy Pelosi’s jet crashes into a river…guess what rescue workers will use to save her…a Jet Ski! Wish I had the numbers on how much jet fuel she uses on each round trip, but I am sure it more than entire of sum of fuel consumed by my 20 years of responsible riding the Pacific. They’re just out riding around and not doing anything productive and killing sea kittens. I live near a small airport where private pilots fly recreationally. Ban those guys while you’re at it. All they do is fly to different states, meet their friends, have dinner or breakfast and fly home. And get rid of motorhomes. Don’t people already have homes?     I recently got involved in the sport. I run, ride bike, hike, swim, kayak, camp, etc. I enjoy many kinds of activities that involve non-motorized movement. However, I truly enjoy jet skiing. It is true that there are many idiots out there that are not exactly the best ambassadors for the sport. Believe me, those morons irritate the crap out of us responsible riders more than you realize. The truth is that there are people like that in boats, in cars, on motorcycles, and yes, even on bikes. Morons are everywhere. Just remember that most people have many interests and when you suggest that it’s a good idea to ban something that they have a strong passon for, some of them are going to get very defensive.

    How would YOU feel if someone supported banning something YOU were as passionate about?

    Not very pleasant.

    Try to see the other side of the coin.

      As I’ve said elsewhere in the comments, I don’t believe in banning Jet Skis from existence. But I do think that Jet Skiiers need to be held accountable for their behavior — whether it relates to noise or pollution or harm to wildlife or endangering people. Nobody’s free to do whatever they want, damn the consequences for places or for other people. And I so think it’s entirely appropriate for governments controlling public space to issue regulations reviewed by the public about the use of that public space, including the shoreline. If Jet Skis and Jet Skiiers didn’t pose a problem, then there wouldn’t be a building public consensus to have them restricted from public space. If Jet Skis and Jet Skiiers stop posing a problem, then there will be a building public consensus to permit their return.

      Of course there are loads of regulations on boats, on cars, on motorcycles and yes, even on bicycles for their use in public spaces. If bicycles start spouting gallons of petrol products onto the grass and running at 50-100 decibels and running over toddlers, you bet your sweet bippy I’ll mock bicyclists too. I notice that bicyclists don’t tend to display their sexual insecurities and engage in aggressive mating rituals while on their bikes, but if they start doing that on their oil-spouting, noisy toddler-smushing bikes I’ll mock them for their wee-wee anxieties too.

    i guarantee if you rode a jet ski for a day you would have a blast. i am a fisherman and had always been annoyed with jets skis zooming around when im fishing. although if u put someone who inst an inconsiderate asshole on a jet ski, who can stay far away from other people and have a good time. there are many other ways to conserve resources rather that to ban jet skis. why not ban mopeds or weed whackers or gas lawn mower’s. or speed boats screw all u little fagots who are afraid to go out into the world and have fun. get off your computer and get out an a jet ski.

Everytime I go to the lake I am surrounded by countless idiots who have no regard for my safety or their own. They are on boats, Jet ski’s, you name it they are idiots. Everytime I go out in my car its the same thing. Idiots everywhere causing accidents and endangering lives of responsible people. It always seems that the most irresponsible drivers are those Greenies in economy sized cars who have not a care in the world for their vehicle or anyone else’s. They are not car people and they sure drive like they don’t care. I highly doubt someone in a new corvette is going to come within an inch of my fender an risk putting a scratch on his prize possession. Its always the Greenies on cloud nine with the toyota prius that has never been washed and dented everywhere that have no respect for their vehicle or anyone else’s. Somehow the greenies think that the guy who drives the small car who doesn’t take care of it and sends it to the junk yard in 2 years is more environmentally friendly than the sports car driver who maintains his vehicle and drives as if he cares. The point I am getting at is that people are irresponsible and you cannot take a right or freedom from a person and expect it to change the person. They will just find another outlet for being an idiot. (The internet perhaps?…lol)Jet skis powersport/RV vehicles are not the problem, its the people that operate them. Its the idiot bike riders on the road who ride on streets with no shoulder thinking they own it. Those so called greenies are an annoyance. Riding a bike on any public road is severely hazerdous for both the rider and vehicle operator. These bikers need to get their head checked. As far as Jetski safety goes, it is the responsibility of the police to fine\ticket people who are breaking the rules. They need to do their jobs to keep our roads and waterways safe. Banning is not the answer. We need to fix the people not the tools they are using. I do not own any SUV’s and only own small sports cars and pickups, the gas savings those vehicles produce far outweighs what my jet ski uses. To keep fuel consumption down the government should give huge tax breaks to those who work at home and do not commute. Employers who allow employees to work at home should also receive a tax credit. Proof of this can be seen on any road be it in a city environment or hillbilly back country. 7:00am-8:30am is gridlocked traffic yet go out at 9am and there is little to know traffic congestion. Same thing can be said with the ride home. By doing this people could spend more time with their families and help correct this mess our country has become ever since the Libs made it so expensive to live that we all have to send our wives to work and watch our kids suffer because of it. Our country is in shambles due to economic conditions and people who write articles like this are not in touch with reality. Let the few who can still afford to go out on their Jet ski’s have some fun. You cannot single out a very small group and put the blame of the whole world on them. (sound pretty close minded to me). If these Libs were truly open minded they would be open to allowing people to enjoy themselves. We need to start deleting laws, not adding new ones or before you know it we will have no freedoms. I cannot understand how these Libs care so much about the rights of terrorists being held in prison’s but care so little for the rights of their fellow americans. I am a realist. There is only so much energy we have to give back to society so please people use it wisely. There are so many more viable avenues a person can take to help society other than attacking a minority group like jet skiers or helping an absurd cause that is only being counterproductive. This is the first time I have ever posted a comment on any web site and I have never felt the need to until reading this article and some of the absurd responses by these liberals. I have no children yet but like my fiance and I both say, if we did we would not be wasting our time on a computer but would be spending time with our children. So for the person who had the comment about the safety of his children. Get off the computer, be a father for a change and pick a safe spot to let them swim.. hello. Be responsible and look out for your child’s safety. Stop trying to get the government to step in and be the man of the house or lake or whatever it may be. You need to be the man! I know someone will probably have a comment about my spelling or grammar but I think I have some viable points. As a side note, more rules, regulations are not the answer. States such as NY where I am originally from, CA, now FL and any of the Dem states are an absolute nightmare to live in unless you are rich. You are taxed beyond belief and in return for paying these taxes you are told what to do are fined beyond belief if you do not listen and have very limited freedom’s. I moved down south where the cost of living is low. There are no wasteful social programs and rediculous laws and taxes. People are expected to be responsible for themselves and in turn enjoy a far lesser cost of living and less in your face government. I swear everytime you breath in NY you are facing some type of ticket or fine. Down south in a red state you are things are free in the literal sense as well as financially. I tell all my NY friends that down south is awful so they will not move down here and vote a democrat in office who will try to update our schools with new textbooks or something and somehow triple my taxes in the process while giving himself a raise. I’ll take any crooked southern politician over any of these Dems. At least they leave everyone the hell alone and don’t steal from them through taxes. I hope some can see the points I am making. Please do not comment back saying that I am implying that anyone who drives a corvette is responsible or that or bike riders are unsafe. I am being real and trying to tear down some of the stereotypes that are not helping anyone. I am showing people both sides of this and letting them know my point of view.

    On a side note… Being a northerner down south I am constantly asking. Do I need a permit for that? How much does that cost? Am I allowed to do this? Will I get a ticket for that? And they always laugh and say you yankees need to chill out and stop worrying. I tell them they would be singing a different tune if they grew up where I did where you are “not so free.” And for the father with the kids who go swimming do not take this as a personal attack. It is just a counter argument to your stating that Jet skiing is a waste of time. (many many things americans do can be considered a waste of time) Thank god we have that right.

    This site and all of the articles and viewpoints published on it are absolutely ludricous. It is intended for non-practical extremests that are a threat to this country and a normal American lifestyle… Just pointing out the obvious that many have seemed to miss. Please realize that the aforementioned insanity is not limited to just Jet Ski’s and their operators. We have to see the bigger picture and how people like this are threatening to control our everyday lives by saying what we can and cannot do. Anyone ever hear of FREEDOM.. Yes the freedom to pollute on a Jet ski, automobile or boat, not just a boat or automobile. Besides fuel consumption is calculated by drag, engine horsepower, and watercraft weight. All of the above indicate that the fuel consumption of a Jet ski, regardless of size, has far greater fuel efficiency and a smaller economic impact than almost any if not every motor boat. Please research before publishing an article and embarrassing yourself. One cannot and should not be an educator if they are not first educated themselves, otherwise it is the blind leading the blind.

    I believe Jake was making a point that he values his jet ski. As long as he is alive to do so he is going to ride it and not allow anyone to take his craft away from him or revoke his right to operate it. Since when do we overlook the obvious!!!.. When were trying to twist something into something its not in order to legitimize an unjust cause.
