It’s become increasingly clear that something very wrong is going on at the Environmental Protection Agency. Over the last year, a steady drumbeat of revelations of political interference in what are supposed to be independent and objective environmental regulation have taken place.
Journalists are investigating the wrongdoing. Congress is investigating the wrongdoing. The Inspector General at the EPA is investigating the wrongdoing.
All of these investigations are being “stonewalled”, says Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility – and they’ve got the memo to prove it.
Leaders at the EPA have instructed EPA employees not to cooperate with any investigations. Not talking to reporters is one thing – but ordering employees not to cooperate with investigators from the Inspector General or from Congress is tantamount to a coverup.
Even on just a crass political level, sending this memo around was a stupid idea. Any EPA employee with integrity would seek to make the memo public – and therefore expose the EPA to even further investigations.
How about that! Another cover-up of a government watch-dog group NOT doing its intended job. Gee, it sure is fun to read about all this stuff that’s going on basically in plain sight and nothing being done about it. Hey, i know, let’s start a petition and send it to our Congress so they can promptly assign a committee to investigate it for about 3 years while all those people walk away and resume their lives. Maybe they’ll get retroactive immunity or a presidential pardon or a secret decoder ring to protect them. Oh well, i guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
