Watch the Dam Cam for Slow Destruction

Here’s a bit of slow entertainment that’s better than what you’ll find on your TV set:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Restoration Center and the Conservation Law Foundation are teaming up to provide visual documentation of the destruction of a dam in the village of Merrimack on the Souhegan River in New Hampshire.

It’s called the dam cam.

The dam no longer serves any practical function for humans, but it does interfere with the life cycles of fish such as river herring, salmon, shad and eel. So, the dam is being taken down… carefully. You can watch the progress of the dam removal, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of August, which means that it will probably stretch into September.

A warning – today’s images seem to be only partially available, so go to the calendar on the left of the dam cam page, and click on August 5 to see something more complete.
