Indications of something brewing at Denver Protests

The DNC protests are not being organized by Martin Luther King, Henry David Thoreau or United for Peace and Justice.

GUMM Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-JitsuRecreate68 is planning to hold “self-defense for protesters” training sessions and “logistics sessions” for protesters during the Democratic National Convention. These sessions are being organized by GUMM (a group that teaches mixed martial arts, jiu-jitsu and kickboxing) and Unconventional Denver (an outfit which obliquely refers to planned protest activities “at a variety of risk levels”).

Recreate 68 has a Statement of Nonviolence and Principles. Read it closely. Here are some pieces I find interesting, with my emphasis added:

… We are resolved that our group will not instigate violence against human beings as a means to end this system of violence and injustice. However, we recognize the right of the people to self-defense and community defense….

To maintain solidarity with, and respect the guidelines of, all permitted activities, recognizing that there are many individuals who seek a safe and peaceful protest….

Not to turn people over to the police, or share information with the police about other groups.

Not to publicly criticize the tactics used by other parts of our movement or cooperate with media efforts to be divisive or portray good protester/bad protester.

To publicly condemn police repression and brutality.

To be conscious that if violence or property destruction does occur, we will do what we can to help prevent it from being blown out of proportion and dominating the media coverage.

Yes, that’s right: the alliance that features strong opposition to the continuing war in Iraq doesn’t want any protester violence to be blown out of proportion, although police violence should be visibly condemned. “Self-defense” and “community defense” are loopholes big enough to smash a fist through. And by all means, enough with the whole oppressive “good/bad” judgments of protesters… who are using the convention to declare strong distinctions between their idea of a “good” ideal world and the “bad” reality.

I am sure that most of the people going to Denver are peaceful, righteous dudes and dudelles. But if you go to Denver, keep your head up and know who you’re with.

I’ve sent an inquiry to Recreate68 asking them to clarify what’s going on. I promise to share with you whatever response I receive.
