Ben Franklin on Success and Peace

Benjamin Franklin once wrote, “The key to success is found under the alarm clock.”

Well, I’ve looked under the alarm clock, but I have not found the key to success there. What I have found under the alarm clock is exhaustion and baggy eyes.

Of course, as a pacifist, I support the literal interpretation of the Franklin quote. However, I believe that there are other, more figurative interpretations as well, that Ben Franklin would have done well to heed.

Getting out of bed in the morning is a war. Resting an extra 15 minutes is the best peace there is. There never was a good war or a bad peace, Ben. Remember that.

Or how about “Early to bed and late to rise makes a man less baggy under the eyes”? No, that’s not a Franklin quote. It’s a Fitzer quote.

Yet, here I am, up before 6:30 AM. I admit that I can’t help getting up early. Still, I don’t feel the healthier, wealthier or wiser for it, and I’m still looking for that damned key.
