Right wingers are busy working hard to invent a crisis that will distract voters from the chaotic failure their ideology has brought to Washington D.C. They’ll say that things like environmental issues are irrelevant, and then claim that some kind of attack on Christmas is taking place – at a department store.
Well, in spite of what the evangelical conspiracy theorists claim, Christmas is scheduled to occur right on schedule this year. Some other things are happening at the North Pole, however, that represent a real crisis.
We’ve known for some time that southern Greenland is experiencing an extreme melt-off of the sort that has never been seen during recorded history. It had been assumed, however, that northern Greenland glaciers would remain stable for some time to come, being as they are so close to the North Pole.
That assumption has proven to be false. A huge crack has developed in a glacier in northern Greenland, and it threatens to trigger a massive unlocking of ice on the island within the next few years, creating a rise in sea levels even greater than climatologists working with models to predict global warming had feared.
This is a real crisis happening not very far from the northern Atlantic coastline of the United States. Elves in Santa’s workshop won’t fix the problem, so forget the war on Christmas. We can’t afford to have the land of make believe shape our nation’s business any more.
