Remember the Bridge To Nowhere? It was a bridge, proposed by a Republican congressional earmark, that would have been larger than the Golden Gate Bridge, but would have led only to the little island of Gravina, where just 50 people live. It was just part of a larger problem - 6,371 pork barrel construction projects Republicans asked for that year, 12 times what Democrats requested.

Well, during her speech at the Republican National Convention last night, Sarah Palin got big cheers when she said, “I told Congress ‘Thanks, but no thanks’ on that Bridge To Nowhere!”

It was a strong line. It made Sarah Palin sound like a strong reformer, a person of principle.

But was it true? Not exactly.

It seems that Sarah Palin actually was for the Bridge To Nowhere before she was against it.

During her campaign to be Governor, the Anchorage Daily News asked Palin whether she supported the Bridge To Nowhere. “Yes,” she responded. “The window is now — while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.”

How is it that “Yes” translates to “Thanks, but no thanks”?

It’s part of the Alaskan dialect, see. The same dialect in which Palin is the Alaskan word for Quayle.

It’s a translation that isn’t going over very well in Alaska. Back in 2006, Sarah Palin supported the Bridge To Nowhere so much that she declared that the term “Bridge To Nowhere” was an outrageous insult to a worthy transportation project. Now, Palin uses the “Bridge To Nowhere” term herself. Ketchikan mayor Bob Weinstein explains, “She pandered to us by saying, ‘I’m for this’ … and then when she found it was politically advantageous for her nationally, abruptly she starts using the very term that she said was insulting,”

What else will Sarah Palin flip flop on, when it becomes politically convenient? Whether you like Sarah Palin’s current political agenda or not, the fact is that you can’t trust her. Sarah Palin is no reformer. She’s just a politician who changes direction with the slightest breeze of convenience.
