You ask why three times over Attorney Michael Mukasey wouldn’t answer whether waterboarding (the process of drowning someone until their mind breaks) is torture during his confirmation hearings?
The answer is simple. If he told the nation that waterboarding was torture (as case law and the JAG clearly state it is), then Mukasey would have to investigate and prosecute his sponsors and benefactors in the Bush administration.
This is because, as breaking news reveals, the Bush administration issued two separate memos explicitly endorsing the use of waterboarding torture on its indefinite detainees, many of whom have been exonerated.
Your government tortured innocent people.
The Bush administration was in on it.
The Bush administration lied to you about it.
Attorney General Michael Mukasey, the top law enforcement agent in the nation, helped cover it up.

That’a about all we can do now, hang our heads in shame, since we’ve let these fascists run our country into the ground and rape us while they were at it. No sustained marching in the streets, no outrage in the press, and no response from “our government” when any protest to their invasive policies, both home and abroad, did occur. Well, here we are after 8 years of abuse and now the damage is done. We’re a wreck and we’ve created a global recession at the very least because of our “leaders.” Good job, America - that’s the way to lay down and let the fascist boots walk all over you! In fact, i still see people proudly displaying Bush/Cheney 2004 bumperstickers on their cars and now i see little ramshackle houses with HUGE McCain/Palin signs out front. Amazing how ignorant and deluded the electorate has become.
I’d really like to hear Sarah Palin comment on this, doggone it, but more than that, I’d like to hear Barack Obama, Joseph Biden and John McCain talk about this - because they all refused to even show up to vote on the Mukasey confirmation. Obama, Biden and McCain were all AWOL on torture.
Well, you see, since it is being done to arabs and other dusky skinned people, it is not torture, since torture only counts if it is done to a person.
We All know that an arab isn’t a person, unless of course he is jewish, or christian.
We also All know, that since Bush, Cheney, and their friends are all good upstanding christians, then they are all of the highest moral character and thus can’t be guilty of anything, and even if they are, then god will forgive them, and who are we to question god’s judgement in the matter?
Ben Franklin had it right, the majority of americans do not deserve liberty, since they sold their souls to Bush Inc. in order to feel a little more secure.
I think Elle is onto something, and I think the key phrase is “other” people. My fellow citizens won’t care about this, because they will always believe that torture will happen to “other” people, not to “us.”
